5/14 - my JAX BOAT CLUB REPORT

Is it that time of year, ALREADY?

As a dedicated inshore fisherman. And a complete "Trout fishing snob".
Some of you may not like what I'm about to tell you. While some of you may not.

Over the course of just two weeks. We went from nice cool spring time. To just about all out summer like conditions. No, I'm not talking about breaking a sweat sooner as you push the lawn mower around your yard.

I'm talking about the fishing in the St. Johns River!

The only real way to describe this, is what happened on two charters I recently had. Each trip was almost identical.
-Falling tide.
-Same exact spot.
-Each day, two experienced guys.
-Float-rig fishing live shrimp.
-Target species: Speckled Trout, and any other commonly edible, game fish.

On April 25th, they were catching 4 and 5 pound Speckled Trout. YES, Gators. Tree shakers! So easy, it was like falling off a stump! Just Trout and Sheepshead. NO BAIT STEALERS AT ALL!

Jump ahead exactly 14 days to May 11th, on the same spot.

Same falling tide. Same exact fishing technique, same live shrimp as bait. Upon arrival the bait stealing thieves, ie: Tiny Pinfish, Mangrove Snappers, a few small Bluefish, Jacks and Ladyfish, and whatever else lurked below the surface. Were making the use of fishing a live shrimp, almost a futile exercise!! Shrimp were eaten by "undesirables", almost immediately.

The water temp jumped from 68 degrees to a now warm 74 degrees in the St. Johns river.

BRING ON THE HUNGRY, BAIT SNATCHERS!

But, my two guys on this trip were experienced Anglers. And they prevailed. WHY? Because they didn't simply give up. As the tide fell further and further, they'd pick Trout off the spot. First, just a few 15 inchers.  Then, a 5 pounder. Then a Sheepshead. Then a 23" Redfish.  As the live shrimp in the baitwell, started to dwindle, less and less, from feeding the bait snatchers. They'd hook up another 5 pounder! Then another, and another! Till every live Shrimp we had was gone.

So, what am I trying to say here?

In this area, as the water's warm. The small undesirable fish start to become a nuisance. Stay with it. If you get live bait in the morning. Buy twice as much as you did a month ago. Don't get impatient. Summer inshore fishing isn't always going to be a "instantaneous gratification" activity, as it can be in the winter months. Stick with it. Fish harder and smarter.

5/12 - NO....this is actually about fishing!

So, from my last report the view count is thru the roof. It was ZERO to do about fishing and it was oh so popular.

It got more views than my gawd damn "own" videos!

Yeah, it's been about a month since I did a video. And it doesn't really seem to matter.

The reason? My dad's been very ill and was in the hospital for 9 days. So, my mind really wasn't "into" sitting for 8 hrs editing a video.

I do have some topics, I could do a video about. But I'll get around to it.

After the views of my last report (below this one), I wonder if I ought to just post other peoples video's?

Here's some recent catches. BIG REDFISH & BIG TROUT, BIGGER DAMN SHIPS.....that reverse the tide flow in the river!  And super Sun rises I see every day.

Don's 20 pound Bull Redfish (1 of 3 hooked up...a few lost due to ROCKS!)

Don's Mom got this hefty Sheepshead. (His dad did too but no picture)

Bob's GATOR TROUT!

Jason's GATOR TROUT!

More GATOR TROUT 5 pounders!!!!!!!!

Bob's 22"  keeper sized Redfish. He also caught a Sheepshead, float-rig fishing.
On this day he caught his 1st Trout, Redfish and Sheepshead EVER!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MULLING OVER CHANGING MY RATES FOR WEEKENDS. DUE TO THE RIVER IS ALMOST UN-FISHABLE ON WEEKENDS AND IT'LL COST ME ALOT MORE TO GET OUT OF THE "HUB" FUEL WISE. TO GET AWAY FROM THE CROWDS.

SO A CHANGE COULD BE COMING. MY RATES HAVEN'T CHANGED IN YEARS!!!!

AT THE SAME TIME I JUST RECEIVED A EMAIL THAT "AMAZON PRIME" IS GOING UP FROM $99 A YEAR TO $120 A YEAR AS OF MAY 11TH.

EVERYTHING COST MORE AND AT THE SAME TIME MY COSTS GO UP, I HAVE NEVER RAISED MY RATES....THAT COULD CHANGE!

5/9 - off topic but so TRUE!

SEEING THIS IS MY ''BLOG''. NOT A SOCIAL MEDIA THING. IT'S WORTH ME SHOWING MY EXACT VIEWS, CONCERNING ALL ASPECTS OF MY LIFE AND MY BUSINESS.

THIS BLOG IS THE SAME THING AS THE WEEKLY COLUMN BY OLE ANN LANDERS, CIRCULATED THROUGH ALMOST EVERY NEWSPAPER IN THE NATION CALLED ''DEAR ABBY''. BACK WHEN NEWSPAPERS REPORTED THE NEWS. AND HAD PEOPLE WRITE LETTERS IN TO ''DEAR ABBY''.

I CAN'T EVEN GET A SINGLE COMMENT!!!!  NOT A SINGLE ''MESSAGE'', VIA THIS BLOG, FROM A SINGLE READER!!!!!

EVEN THOUGH EACH REPORT ''USED TOO'' BE POSTED ON MY FACEBOOK PAGE, THAT NO LONGER EXISTS. BUT STILL GOES OUT ALL OVER MY GOOGLE+ AND TWITTER PAGE.

YES, MY READERS ARE SO ENGAGING, ITS LIKE DEATH. GUESS MY READERS, DON'T DO MUCH SOCIAL MEDIA EITHER. LIKE ME??

I SEE THE NUMBER OF VIEWS EACH PAGE HERE GETS,  ITS NOT THAT MANY. YEARS AGO IT WAS WAY,WAY MORE.

MOST OF THE TIME, I CAN'T EVEN GET A POTENTIAL CHARTER CUSTOMER TO WATCH A VIDEO ON MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL.

WHICH IS THE REASON I LABOR FOR HOURS EDITING THOSE VIDEOS.

AS A TRUE DIE HARD AND ONE WHO DOESN'T GIVE UP HOPE.

BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW, I'VE BEEN DOING REPORTS-EDITORIALS, REVIEWS, VIDEOS AND GRIPES VIA THIS BLOG LINKED OFF MY WEBSITE SINCE......
1999?
YEAH, THAT'S THE KILLER.

RECEIVED 65 VIEWS OF THIS AS OF THIS CHECKING....WOW, GUESS THE PAUL JOSEPH WATSON VIDEO DID IT, HUH.

GOT MORE VIEWS OF THIS REPORT THAN ANY OF MINE WITH ACTUAL FISHING VIDEO!!!!!

THAT SURELY SUCKS!

THIS BLOG FORMAT IS SO SCREWED UP, I CAN'T EVEN REPLY TO SOMEONE WHO COMMENTED.  AND CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHY IT'S SO SCREWED UP. IT WASN'T THE LAST TIME SOMEONE COMMENTED.

SO IT'S EMAILS FOR ME. OTHER THAN MESSAGING ME VIA THE SIDEBAR MASSAGE WIDGET. I CAN'T EVEN REPLY TO YOU.

5/8 - SPRING TROUT BITE STILL STRONG!

The spring Trout bite is still strong. GOOD..."I love them."

Float-rigging though means "live shrimp, it's what's for dinner".
And it's that time of year (water temp 72 degrees) that everyone has a passion for eating your pure oxygen fed super sprightly shrimp (the one's on my boat). And that's Jacks, Blues, Spanish Macs, and Ladyfish too.

But that's sort of ok, cause I'm in the fish biting biz. I only "want" to be a only Trout biting SNOB!

This report is worthy for one reason. I took Bud out today. (and his care giver Michelle) I had Bud as a customer over 12 years ago.  Back then he was a old fisherman. Now? He's really a old fisherman.

Or as he referred to himself as, "a ole fart fisherman".

YES, back when I had my demo Bay Boats from Carolina Skiff, and my 23' MayCraft center console. Is the last time I had Bud on my boat.

He's 89 years old now. And he wanted to get back out there. He had mobility problems way back when. So now he really doesn't get around at all.

So who does he call to go fishing with? Specifically, FLOAT-RIG FISHING?

The Jettywolf. Because he saw and heard the boat HAS ROOM!  Room NO Pathfinder would ever have. No room a flats skiff would ever have. REAL FISHING ROOM. He could put his chair and fish from.

He fished a whole "standard day", 6 hours. Kicked back in his camo folding chair.

We caught (he and Michelle) 8 Speckled Trout, too many to count Jacks up to 7 pounds. Two Bluefish, and 3 Ladyfish. I caught two pup Redfish and two Trout on Jigs-n-Shrimp combo meals.

So, if you want to fish a "real" charter boat. With true fishing amenities. Like ROOM to actually fish from. And a "guide" standing right there (not fishing up on the bow all day long).

You now know who to call! (904) 642-9546

5/1 - ONE LONG RIDE.....

Had to get my trailer fixed. It was long over due. Had cracks in the welds of the Rollsaxle trailer "spring system".  My trailer is 14 years old and need some attention.

And since it is guaranteed FOR LIFE!  I had the boat taken off the trailer, and put on a rack and ran almost to Tampa at 5am, got there at Rollsaxle trailer at 10am and they fixed it for free, while there had all the bearings changed out, and headed back all in one day...One Long Day!!

Here's the Jettywolf going air borne. OH NO!

Today, this morning. She goes back on the trailer and to her home under the giant boat port. Where she belongs.

------------------------------------------------------

It was a rough morning fishing the FULL MOON TIDES the other day. Here's Richard's 1st ever Sheepshead.

He and his friend of course had loads of Jacks and Bluefish too. While attempting to float-rig fish for Trout. But he wanted food fish. And that was tough to get in between all the Jacks and Bluefish on the mega-high tide, we had due to the FULL MOON.

Here's the only thing I like about when it gets REALLY WARM, with summer on it's way.....

4/26 - GGG' GATORS!

http://www.captdaves.com - Book your charter Today!

"JETTYWOLF LIVE" - Capt Dave takes Chip & Chip fishing. The lure fishing duo, trout maniacs, local Jax residents.

Usually these guys fish small boats and fish lures for the wonderful and top rated Florida species referred to as "Speckled Sea Trout".

But today aboard the Jettywolf with Capt Dave. These guys are rockin' it "ole school". One Chip has his roots in Float-rigging, the other has never done it.

Not only are Florida GATOR Trout caught, but also some FIRSTS take place. They also caught some smaller non-keeper sized Trout, a Whiting and a Sheepshead.

Comparatively. It was super kicked back, loads of fish stories, BS'n, and laughs, charter day.

4/24 - TIS' THE SEASON.....be a Boy Scout or pay the price.

Why is it fisherman (sort of). The travelling type. Vacationers, etc. NEVER want to be prepared?  Oh they'll show up with Gilligan's Island Provisions that fill a 200 quart cooler, they'll show up with enough beer. But they just think, "It won't rain, not on my fishing day!"

FLORIDA RAINS A LOT! STARTING RIGHT NOW!

YOU CAN BET, I HAVE ALL THE RAIN JACKET I NEED NEATLY CARRIED IN MY BOAT FOR SUCH AN OCCASION.

But, it was just the other day, and the threat of rain was emanate. I told the guy who booked the charter, "Hope you all brought some rain jackets (or something) just in case?"   His response, "well if it's gonna rain, then we aren't going!"

-that has to be the most UN-boy scout response I've heard in a long time.

Golfers carry a rain suit. Hunters going Elk hunting in the woods of Wyoming in the winter dress to stay warm.

Vacationing (once in awhile) fisherman, don't even want to be prepared!

I've dealt with this for over 20 years now.  What is the problem?
You're going out in "mother nature", she's unpredictable.
Why not at least try and not have your day ruined by getting soaked?

Yes, I have a MEGA-TOP on my boat now, it helps with light showers.
But in side ways rain, you'll get WET!

I DO NOT CANCEL CHARTERS FOR POTENTIAL RAIN. I DO NOT END THE DAY BECAUSE OF A LIGHT SHOWER.

this is Florida......the deep south (although no one thinks of it like that anymore)  It rains here a lot.

So, when I call you the day before with a weather HEADS-UP call between 4-6pm. I'll let you know what the weather could be like.

if you didn't bring any foul weather gear, this gives you time to go get some.

DON'T BE A 'GIRL SCOUT'.....BE A EAGLE SCOUT!

4/23 - ole school never goes out of style

SPRING HAS SPRUNG, (doesn't matter what the calendar says)

As a Angler, my seasons are dictated by the weather, and what the fish are doing. March 20th may have been the first day of Spring for the landlubber crowd. But for me, spring just arrived last week. Because while on a charter we caught the first Spanish Mackerel of the year. Yep, the Spaniards arriving is the kick-off in my book. And should be in yours also.

Ninety percent of the time, I'll catch my first Spanish Mackerel at the Mayport Jetties. But not this year! We were Trout fishing with float-rigs and live shrimp near Blount Island in the St. Johns river when the Spanish ate our live shrimp.

Another oddity was way back on the first week of March, we caught the first Jack Crevalle of the year and the first Pompano. Guess these fish didn't get the Memo. They also were caught way inland from the Ocean.

So, now that the Spanish have arrived. What's the big deal you ask?

How about taking the Kids out to the Mayport Jetties on a rising tide and doing the Spring time "right of passage", trolling..

A lost art, locally these days.  Hardly no one does it any longer. Many new boaters/fisherman, never seen the lines of boats outside the inlets years ago trolling and loading coolers full of the Spanish Macs, that used to happen each year around this time. Again, it was a blast. And everyone was in on it, years ago.

But this fishing guide doesn't forget about the ole school ways. If I get a boat load of kids, there's almost nothing more fun to do for a few hours than troll up a mess of Spanish, Bluefish, and Jacks. No one has to be a expert. Just start reeling when one is on.

The ole school way is to troll planers and spoons. At a very fast clip. Making quick turns. Known as "turning and burning", on the hungry schools of fish.

Trolling PLANERS & SPOONS, very effective!!

4/19 - jus live shrimp and I love it!

http://www.captdaves.com - Book your charter Today!

"JETTYWOLF LIVE" - 4/19/18

had JaxJoe aboard with his wife and friend, aboard the Jettywolf on a blowing, but sunny day at the Mayport Jetties and in the St. Johns River, Jacksonville, Florida.

We float-rigged as we call it locally. Using a "slip float" rig. Then later we just bottom fished over rocks for 5 - Sheepshead.

USING ONLY LIVE SHRIMP (purchased from B&M bait & Tackle, Atlantic Beach FL)

Spring is full swing as the Green Scourge fish have arrived. Nasty Bluefish. Spanish Mackerel have arrived, so has Jack Crevalles.

Check out my website for all charter fishing info. The 26' Jettywolf is the safest, largest, inshore/coastal full-time charter boat in the area. www.captdaves.com - since 1996

As mentioned in the Video:

**Long Reach fish releasing tool. (well worth it in my book!)

**Filletzall Blades (goes in any one handed reciprocating saw such as the best Battery version is Makita, and a good corded model is a Ridgid or Makita)

**Dexter Outdoors 7" Sofgrip fillet knife w/ dexguard coating (what I believe is the best Dexter fish knife made)
