OCTOBER - MAY (usually, Mother's day) cooler water temps, dress for success, shrimp for bait, light tackle fishing, aboard the JETTYWOLF.
http://www.captdaves.com - since 1996, your Jax fishing charter/guide. and it isn't right now.....just yet. BUT IT'S ALSO COMING THIS FALL/WINTER! RIGHT NOW:
HAD TO CHASE THIS ONE...'deja vu' again...(see other report blow, same deal) Hell, I have very poor golfing skills and need jumbo clubs!! People really need some fishing skills to boat a 35 pounder on ''light'ish'' tackle. We were just in 10 feet of water, because I hate that deep water, giant sinker, heavy tackle B.S. Thats done around here. Just recovering from blowing out my shoulder by all that deepwater anchoring. So, NO MORE of that 45' of water for me! GOT THIS ONE! But lost a smaller Redbass at the boat on live mullet. Action wasn't fast and furious. Also had one big Ladyfish, lost at boat also. From now on, no more ''live bait'' rods and reels, for these bull Reds. here's what I was using, and the larger (my shark tackle) of what I'll be using from now on.
Yep, the last two days are sure filled with loads of stories.
-Shoulder pain
-stuck anchor releasing tricks
-the MULLET RUN north of the St. Johns River is unbelievable! Keyword:NORTH, of the St. Johns river.
In the river it's almost not even happening comparatively.
Lost monster Redfish....to chasing down Bull Redfish that want to spool the reels!
Crazy, Crazy Stuff.
Had this man have his 90th Birthday on my boat. He just beat the all-time-record of 85, by 5 years. He said, "oh, a youngster?"
he didn't act or look 90 to me! This here, is 1 of 3 in a row, within minutes of each other on live mullet. #1got off the hook #2 broke the 50# leader #3smoked off all the line on the reel and we had to pull anchor and chase it!! (33 pounder) -all within less than 5 minutes as a school of bull Redfish swam by the boat in 15' of water!

My big Suzuki 250 Outboard gets annual maintenance, by changing the internal anode zincs. It's easy to do, and I can't run to the dealer everytime something needs to be done.
I can not drop my boat off and pick it up, MAYBE a week later!! That's probably the toughest part of being in the charter fishing business in Jacksonville, FL.
I save thousands of dollars doing simple maintenance procedures
myself, on ''''my''' down days. On my schedule. You can too, with simple hand tools, and a little bit of mechanical skills. I have just that...''a little''. And lots of old hand tools.
I SHOW YOU ON MY DF250 SUZUKI HOW TO CHANGE THESE SUZUKI PARTS: ANODE PROTECTION: INTERIOR ANODES (8) SUZUKI PART # 55321-87J01 LIST PRICE PER UNIT: $5.62 EACH O-RINGS D: 1.9 ID - (8) SUZUKI PART # 09280-22019 LIST PRICE PER UNIT: $1.97 TOTAL COST FOR MY DF250: $60.72 PER YEAR

I find the sociology of the public fascinating. I guess, that's what you'd call it by studying the flow of how the general public operates. I've had 22 years of practice watching how the ''gp'' works.
September is the worst month of year, for any activity, charter wise. Here is another September weekend, with perfectly good weather, and the JETTYWOLF sits, fuel tank full of $3.10 non-ethanol gas, clean as a whistle. Coolers cleaned out, ready for fresh ice, bearing on trailer freshly greased up, and batteries held at a perfect charge. That's called, READY TO GO!
BUT!!!!
OH NO, LABOR DAY WAS LAST WEEK. SUMMER MUST BE OVER, ''WE CAN'T GO FISHING'' FOR JAX RESIDENTS, NO ONE IS VISITING....(NORMALLY, THE ONLY TIME A JAX. RESIDENT BOOKS A CHARTER, BECAUSE SOMEONE IS COMING FROM OUT OF TOWN OR OUT OF STATE.) YOU SHOULD BE GETTING WITH ME RIGHT NOW, AND THINKING ABOUT YOUR FALL TRIP. ALL IT'S GONNA TAKE IS ONE TROPICAL STORM AND..... SUMMER 2018 WILL REALLY BE OVER!! THAT'S HOW I OPERATE. NOT BY SOME HUMAN CALENDAR, BUT BY ''MOTHER NATURE'S'' CALENDAR!
HTTPS://WWW.CAPTDAVES.COM WORKING ON TWO VIDEOS. AND YOUTUBE SUBSCRIBER CONTEST. WITH THE ''OH SUMMER'S OVER ATTITUDE'', I HAVE TO ALWAYS LIVE THRU THIS MONTH.
ZERO HAS CHANGED IN 20 YEARS. SEPTEMBER AFTER LABOR DAY IS LIKE THE ''DEAD ZONE'', EVERY YEAR.
Y-O-U, SHOULD BE BOOKING YOUR BEST TIDAL DATES FOR AT LEAST OCTOBER....RIGHT NOW!!!!!!
THIS WEEK IN OCTOBER THE TIDE WILL BE PURE EVIL...BEWARE!!!!
-anyone remember what hilarious movie this song was played in?
As far as River and Jetty fishing (what I do) it's been a long hot summer (they all seem to be). And now it's time to look ahead to the fall season. My problem is; I don't know if I like Fall or Spring fishing better. All I know is, I don't care for Summer, that's for sure! Come October it's all out combat fishing. I can get back in my favorite mode aboard the JETTYWOLF, and that means fishing the Mayport jetties, a lot more. All we need is the water temps to cool, have a few good storms drop in on us, and everything will really fall into place. (here comes, the Mullet Run. They are on the move, already.)
The New Moon in October is the week of the 6th through the 11th, it will be wicked strong! And the Full Moon is the 24th, a bit calmer. Which fits in line with one of the greatest weeks of the year. Halloween, and the Florida vs. Georgia Football game. And from then on till Mother's Day 2019, I call it, ''JETTYWOLF TIME''. (you should be able to insert your name too!) If you're not catching big Bull Redfish that week by the numbers, from the river, jetties and beaches....."then what are you waiting for?"
Here's a few examples of last October's clients:
I LOVE THIS VIDEO.....SO MUCH FUN WITH THE GALS ABOARD
https://www.captdaves.com - reports blog AUGUST REPORTS, JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA LATE SUMMER INLET & ST. JOHNS RIVER FISHING REPORTS DAY ONE 8/28: PULLED AWAY FROM DOCK FOR 30 SECONDS AND HERE CAME THE DRIVING RAIN WITH BLASTING GUSTS OF WIND.
TIED BACK OFF TO DOCK F-A-S-T! HAD CHRIS AND HIS WIFE JESSICA ABOARD......''AT LEAST THEY BROUGHT RAIN JACKETS!!!" NOT MANY PEOPLE DO.
AND YOU NEED TO THIS TIME OF YEAR.
WE FISHED A AWFUL FULL MOON TIDE AND IN THE RAIN 95% OF THE DAY! (THANK GOODNESS FOR THE JETTYWOLF'S MEGA-TOP) CAUGHT CROAKERS AND WHITING JUST FOR FUN AND FOR CUT BAIT AT THE JETTIES. NO WAY WAS I RUNNING AROUND LOOKING FOR POGIES. THE WIND WAS STRONG AND THE SOUTHSIDE OF THE SOUTH JETTY WAS ROUGH....JESSICA WASN'T INTO THOSE SEAS.
YEAH.....NOT GREAT LOOKING AT INLET AS A SHIP THREW 6' WAKES COMING IN!
DECIDED TO JUST BOTTOM FISH IN RIVER WITH CUT UP FRESH CROAKERS, STAY PUT AND HOPE FOR A BULL REDFISH.
HOOKED ONLY TWO, GOT A 18 POUNDER TO BOAT, THE SECOND ONE BROKE THE LINE IN ROCKS.
CHRIS' LARGEST FISH EVER
ONE LONG HARD SOUGHT BULL RED TO BOAT FOR CHRIS. GREAT GUY! (USN - 23 YRS AND COUNTING!!!) HOPE TO HAVE HIM AND HIS WIFE ON THE JETTYWOLF AGAIN SOMETIME ---------------------------------------------- DAY - 2 8/29 HAD PAST CUSTOMER MARTY AND HIS SON CARTER ABOARD. BETTER DAY....''NO INCESSANT RAIN''. IT WAS CARTER'S BIRTHDAY TRIP, AND MARTY SAID. LETS TRY FOR BULL REDS. SO WITH THAT IN MIND, WE TRIES H-A-R-D! ALL WITHOUT RUNNING ALL OVER THE PLACE, BUT CONCENTRATING OUR EFFORTS. STILL CRAZY FULL MOON TIDES! CURRENT IN THE RIVER WAS ALWAY B-L-A-S-T-I-N-G! NO BITES!!!! MAYBE ONE HALF HEARTED. CATFISH ARE NOW ALL OVER THE RIVER AND JETTY BOTTOM! THE RIVER SALINITY IS VERY VERY LOW, AT SAY THE OLE LITTLE JETTIES AREA. SO THE RISING TIDE SALTS IT UP A BIT AND SEEMS BETTER. WE TRIED FOR THOSE BULL REDS WITH THE PATIENCE OF JOBE AROUND THE LITTLE JETTIES AFTER CATCHING SOME CROAKERS AND WHITING AT THE JETTIES. RIGHT AFTER ''HIGH TIDE'' AS THE CURRENT SWUNG AND STARTED TO FALL, AFTER FIGHTING CATFISH BITING ALL OUR CUT BAIT CROAKERS AND CUT BLUEFISH CHUNKS, THE TWO GUYS WERE JUST FISHING SHRIMP ON THE BOTTOM. I WAS HOLDING A ROD WITH A BIG CHUNK OF CROAKER ON IT, HITTING THE SINKER ON THE BOTTOM. KINDA ''JIGGING'' IT. DURING THE SLACK'ISH CURRENT...... WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN, I FELT, ''THUMP THUMP'', AND OFF SHE GOES. I HAND THE ROD TO CARTER (the birthday boy) AND HE'S NOW HOOKED UP TO A REAL STRONG REDFISH. YEP, THIS HAS HAPPENED BEFORE. LITERALLY BANGING THE SINKER ON THE BOTTOM DURING THE SLOWER CURRENT HAS A EFFECT. THE SMELL OF THE BAIT, THE SOUND DREW IN THIS PASSING REDFISH IN 30 FOOT OF WATER.
FINALLY!!!!!!! THE ONE WE WERE LOOKING FOR ALL DAY. STRONG, HEALTHY 23 POUNDER. -------------------------------------------- Needless to say, I have many more days pre-booked for the Labor Day holiday. And I'm giving this bull Redfish bottom fishing a ''reel'' break till the October spawn bite. Back to float rig fishing, and jig-n-shrimp combo meals for us. Only have (2) person charter days, which makes it manageable. SO...if you book YOUR date. Keep that in mind. Because with (4) people, all we can really do is, bottomfish and sort through the hardhead catfish! With LIMITED, returns. Unless YOU pick a great tidal and weather date.
MY ''EVERY DAY CARRY'' ITEMS. THAT I DEPEND ON, FOR REASONS THAT WORK FOR ME.....AND SOME ''VLOGGING???''

National Weather Service Looking For Comments on Marine Forecasts
Dear Marine Forecast Customers,
Hope all has been well so far this summer.
Just a quick request if you are OR not in favor of changing the criteria for a SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY.
The National Weather Service (NWS) is considering lowering the sea height criteria to a minimum of 4 feet. This would obviously create more SMALL CRAFT ADVISORIES, which we only issue for the coastal waters forecast out to 60 nm. Please let us know your answer/replies as soon as possible or by August 25, 2018
Currently the advisory criteria is sustained winds 20 knots to 33 knots and / or 7 feet or more for at least 2 hours. There is no precise definition of a small craft. Any vessel that may be adversely affected by small craft advisory criteria should be considered a small craft.
Please fill out the Google questionnaire form link below or If you prefer send me an e-mail by the date of August 25, 2018. Thank you
Lastly, please pass this information request to someone who would want to comment.
As always, thank you for your willingness to help out to improve the level of marine weather services the NWS provides. Anytime you want to submit feedback, please let us know.
