12/10 - 1/2 the best inshore season is OVER ALREADY!!!

DO YOU REALIZE, THAT BY DECEMBER EACH YEAR, THE BEST INSHORE FISHING SEASON IS OVER ALREADY?

NO, THE FISHING ISN'T THE BEST IN JACKSONVILLE WHEN IT'S 100 DEGREES, AS VACATIONERS THINK IT IS.

THEY FISH DURING THE HEAT, BUT WANT EVERYTHING ON A SILVER PLATTER. WHEN IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!!

THEY STEP OFF MY BOAT, TURN AROUND AND ALWAYS ASK, ''WHEN IS IT THE BEST??

I REPLY, ''WHEN YOU WON'T COME HERE. OCT. THRU APRIL."

SO RIGHT NOW, YOU'VE MISSED 1/2 OF IT ALREADY!!!!!!!

JETTYWOLF LIVE
A bit of R&D, St. Johns river out of Mayport Florida. Foggy, breezy, cold and rained too.
Common winter weather. (Footage of 1 out of 6 Black Drum.)
Just because its winter, doesn't mean you can't fish.

The BEST INSHORE, RIVER , INLET FISHING of the year, isn't when it's 100 degrees outside, as most northerners think. INSHORE FISH, hate the heat as much as I do!

12/8 - Jacksonville Offshore Sport Fishing Club

Went to the JOSFC meeting last night.  ''Clam chowder night!'' yum, yum.

I haven't been to my ''Alma Mata'' in months and months. But a cold, rainy night made for a perfect time to attend.

There was a election in October, so the reigns have been passed on, once again.

The club house was packed. And the evenings emphasis was on a raffle to generate funds for a family in need. And indeed the membership stepped up.
Last count was $3000 plus dollars in just a few hours.  (that's more than all my bills for 2 months! Wonder if they could hold another raffle for really poor fishing guides named Dave?)

So many faces have changed. But there's still a few folks that were members 25 years ago, in attendance. Not many, but they were there.

Good ole Capt. George Strait (of Miss Mayport & Mayport Princess local party boat fame) was there, to say a few words. ''A few words he did.'' Which was, unlike him. But he did start off with a good joke.  I was a bit surprised that it was 10 years ago when he was club president. Wow, does time fly!

One change I noticed and was very surprised about, was the club's President asking everyone to stand, face our U.S. flag, a repeat the Pledge of Allegiance.

I couldn't have been more impressed.

ANOTHER CHRISTMAS IDEA FOR A ANGLER

As a pro-staff fishing guide now, for FISHBITES. (if you're a local and you don't know what Fishbites (St. Augustine Florida) are, shame, shame, shame, on YOU!)

I'll be posting some deals. And right now it's all about the new Fight Club line of baits.

And just in, HERE'S  GREAT IDEA FOR THE FISHERMAN IF NOT YOUR SELF.

4 bags of Fishbites Fightclub lures, two of the Fight Club jig heads and free shipping in 50 states for just $21.99.

check these new Fishbites baits out
 https://fishbites.com/saltwater/ffc-stocking-stuffers/

Soon, I'll be doing a new Video all about the ""new"" Fight Club line of baits.  I have a rigging method and even a species and a area I'm wanting to use them.

12/7 - the ''INSHORE'' cross-over boat?

GLASS AND ALUMINUM?
pontoons?
hmmmmm. I'd like to see this first hand, myself.

real unique?
worth it?
or
Disaster?

probably less of a Atlantic coastal boat. More of a Gulf coaster boat, in my opinion.

interesting though. has a few features that regular glass boats should pick up on.

just a Capt. Dave's fishing report's ''find'', I'd thought I'd share.

ALL GLASS VERSION:

Here's my next "Bay Boat".....really. Isn't a bay boat one that you can beat up on a Oysterbed?  Bump a dock you're tying up too? Beach it on a rocky shoreline?

Or is that just the way I'd treat a bay boat?  hahahahahaha

I tell everyone IF I wasn't in the people carrying business, this is all I'd have.
TWEAKED of course. But here's the standard model 20 footer of a "mini-me".
Just add a Jackplate!

12/6 - EVEN SMALL SHEEPS... NO MATCH FOR THE FILLETZALL BLADE

YES, WE ROBBED THE CRADLE AT THE NURSERY, WITH A PILE OF SHEEPS (photo was missing a few) RELEASED MANY A 12 INCHER.

THE JETTIES WERE NOTHING BUT BAIT-STEALERS AND SMALL TROUT.

what a gorgeous morning it was today.see what you're missing?
besides fishing on a wonderful "weekday" with no one to bother us
MY OFFICE VIEW!!!!

There was "twin" Rainbows as we left the dock, actually.

Had two Channel 12 Local News weather folks on the boat this morning, doing video and interview (of your's truly) for a Feb 2018 Story about the river after Hurricane Irma.

12/5 - I'm a recovered Sheepshead hater

http://www.captdaves.com - 904-642-9546 Book your charter Today!

"JETTYWOLF'S HOW-TO"
Sheepshead, the one inshore fish that must yield the least amount of fillet of them all.  Love them or hate them. I've never met anyone who says how much they love cleaning them.

With the most rediculous limit of all inshore/coastal regulated fish in the state of Florida at 15 per person at 12 inches. I usually don't have to worry about my customers "limiting out" on them, since not many people are prepared for the light bite of a Sheepshead. Especially when dangling a Fiddler Crab into structure with current!

But there is those days, when we get our fair share, along with a Black Drum or two, or a actual "keeper sized" Redfish. I used to DREAD having to fillet a bunch of Sheepshead, especially.

Hunters, I think you can benefit too.
There's even a special 'FRESH WATER', fish cleaning blade.
Offshore fisherman
Party boat Captains
We all wish for a better solution

I've have sheepshead dorsal fin's stab me between the fingers. Have them twitch and fall off the cutting table, "dorsal fin down" and have their dorsal spines, go right thru my rubber boot and into my foot!!

They maybe fun to catch. But that's where the FUN has always ended for me!

MY LIFE HAS JUST CHANGED!!

11/30 - my JAX BOAT CLUB fishing report

every few weeks I do a report for Jax boat club's website.
thought I'd share it with you.

Ez - P'ezy fishing! I love this time of year! Not only are the fish very willing participants in my favorite activity.  But, it can also be so "low-tech".

An old mentor of mine was Capt. Fred Morrow. You may have known of him or seen him in his small blue and white boat at the Mayport Jetties with plenty of St. Johns River camouflage on the bottom and sides (aka river tannin stains). His motto was; "Low tech fishing at its’ finest". Which can pretty much sum up this time of year in the river, ICW and at the Jetties.

As a general rule, I never leave the dock without "pounds" of fresh dead shrimp, along with a live well with dozens of live ones too. Lately, I've been doing a lot of jig-n-shrimp fishing. Worked around the Mayport Jetty rocks. Either a ¼, ⅜, or ½ ounce un-painted ball lead heads… and to that, we add a shrimp [hooked, of course, in a certain fashion that I will explain in a later report.] Either pitched up in the jetty rocks or along structure in the river. It’s the "inshore staple".

B-u-t… the 'low tech" thing about it is, we've been catching just about as many fish on dead shrimp and a jig head as we are on the expensive live shrimp. And that's what I love about this time of year. It's, ez-p'ezy!

Here's a day earlier this month where we dropped anchor once all day and stayed hooked up all day on dead shrimp, and various size jig heads.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEXT WEDS. I'LL BE DOING A STORY ON CHANNEL 12 NEWS IN JAX ABOUT THE RIVER SALINITY AFTER THE HURRICANE.  YES, A BIT LATE BUT MY KIND OF SUBJECT MATTER FOR SURE.

I'LL KNOW MORE LATER.

11/29 - I used to recommend this as a perfect x-mas present, NO MORE!

THERE'S A SAYING I BELIEVE IN 100%.

''LIKE A NUCLEAR BOMB, JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN BUILD IT. DOESN'T MEAN THE WORLD NEEDS IT.''

THAT'S EXACTLY HOW I FEEL ABOUT TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING BS ON CARS AND TRUCKS,
INFOTAINMENT COMPUTER SCREENS IN A TRUCK DASHBOARD, STUPID 'START-STOP' ENGINE SYSTEMS, AND SMARTPHONES AND ALL THE BULLSHIT APPS.

I USED TO ALWAYS SUGGEST THE F.S. TIDE PLANNER BOOK FOR A GREAT FISHERMAN'S CHRISTMAS PRESENT.

NOT ANY MORE!!

11/29 - do customers ever read these blog reports? ''NO''

EVERY SINGLE HOLIDAY WEEK, I'LL BE HEADING OUT IN THE MORNING WITH A CREW ABOARD AND AT 8AM, THE PHONE WILL RING AND IT'S SOMEONE ASKING TO GO ON A CHARTER, RIGHT THEN.

11/28 - ''as usual, you're missing the best of the year!''

THE BEST WHAT?

WEATHER & FISHING

I KNOW, YOU'RE WAITING FOR TOUGH FISHING AND 100 DEGREE TEMPS, RIGHT?

WELL, WHEN YOU ASK IN JULY, AUGUST AND SEPTEMBERS EXTREME HEAT, WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR FOR THE TROUT, REDFISH, BLACK DRUM, & SHEEPSHEAD.

I'LL CHUCKLE AS I USUALLY DO AND ANSWER WITH THE STATEMENT I'VE MADE FOR OVER 20 YEARS...

''NOVEMBER THRU APRIL WITH MY FAVORITE BEING NOVEMBER!
BUT YOU WON'T COME FISH THEN. IT'S LIKE IT'S AGAINST THE LAW. BECAUSE IT'S THE HOLIDAY SEASON...''

AND GUESS WHAT?

I'M ALWAY RIGHT!

11/21 - BEST GIFT FOR A ANGLER

Yes, I highly recommend one of these knives for the Angler.

I have been using these for over a year now and these ARE without a doubt, the last fillet knife I'll ever need.

The magic is they do not rust and corrode!  As you've seen in my other video's. I use them on my boat. After cleaning fish all I do is wipe them down. And store them.

Yes, you'll still have to sharpen them. They aren't forever sharp. But then again just follow the instructions to sharpen on just one side.  (the side that it says so.)

Made in Florida!
Not China like all the rest. Support Floridians, not the Chinese!

They range in sizes and styles.

Check out:  www.titanknifetech.com
and tell them Capt Dave sent ya.

Their website has loads of info and how-to on it. Plus a shopping page.

I'll post another Christmas gift idea if I can figure out something that's as well made and ""useful"" as these are, as we go along.

Use the ""CONTACT FORM"" on the right side bar of this blog if you'd like to massage me.

1/4, 3/8, 1/2 OZ. BALL HEAD OR OTHER SIMPLE DESIGNS. NO COLOR NEEDED. I PLAYED WITH A SWINGING HOOK DESIGN FOR AWHILE IN 3/8THS OUNCE.

HAD JOHN ABOARD WITH ME, FROM NEBRASKA. THIS WAS ALL BRAND NEW TO HIM. THERE'S NO 10 TON GRANITE BOULDER PILES WITH DEEP CURRENT IN NEBRASKA! HE CAUGHT THE YELLOWMOUTH TROUTS (AKA: WEAKFISH) THAT WERE VERY WILLING.

REDFISH, SHEEPSHEAD, BLACK DRUM, MANGROVE SNAPPERS, SPANISH MACKEREL, JACKS, TARPON.

EVERYONE EATS A SHRIMP, AND EVERYONE EATS A SHRIMP ON A JIGHEAD.

I HAVE MY PREFERED TYPES WITH A CERTAIN HOOK SIZE. NO NEED FOR A MONSTER HOOK! I FIND THE EAGLE CLAW GOLD 630 HOOKS STRONG ENOUGH. SIZE HAS TO BE RIGHT FOR "ALL SIZE FISH", IS THE KEY.

"JETTYWOLF LIVE" 11/9/2017

Out and about with buddy Nick, aboard my "JETTYWOLF". Getting in a days fishing, (and hoping for some keepers, for dinner) before the weekend cold front with big winds.

Plan was to go light tackle, and either pitch jig & shrimp combo meals, or do some Float-rig Fishing (slip-floats) with live shrimp.

Would have loved to get into the heaps of Black Drum, like I caught in this video just 6 days prior (last week): https://youtu.be/U1kHaqiknTY

But the Croakers were so thick. And the Redfish, were either
"TOO SMALL OR TOO BIG"" to be kept for a dinner in the state of Florida.

So, we went at high tide up into a shallow area, hoping for "keeper sized" Speckled Trout, and Black Drum.

We had a good time anyhow. And did box enough Speckled Trout, Yellowmouth Trout (weakfish) and a small but over legal sized Black Drum for us to split, so we could have fish dinners.

Moral of the story here folks is. When you go out on a charter even, "keeper grocery fish??"".....I'm not in charge of what size fish bites!

SURE, we could have filled a cooler with Croakers while we were out there. But that's not what we were looking for.
