8/8-8/10 - River fish vacated! (TROUT VANISHED)

TRIED THE RIVER TWICE. EARLIER THIS WEEK AND TODAY.
THE CROAKERS I WANT FOR BAIT ARE ABSENT FROM WHERE I WAS CATCHING THEM JUST A WEEK OR TWO BEFORE. 

THE RIVER SALINITY  WHERE I WAS FISHING IS QUITE LOW. AND ALL THE TROUT BITES DROPPED OFF LIKE A ROCK!

SO I STARTED TESTING AT LOW AND HIGH TIDES. 

A FEW TRIPS WITH NO TROUT OR REDS HAS ME HEADING EAST TO THE JETTIES HERE IN THE DEEP DARK MONTHS OF SUMMER, I GUESS.

THE REDFISH ARE EATING POGIES AT THE VERY END OF THE ROCKS, FOR THE TROLLING MOTOR CROWD.  I CERTAINLY CAN'T ANCHOR AT THE VERY TIPS OF THE JETTY ROCKS!

POGIES FOR ME HAVE BEEN A REAL BITCH TO CATCH. SO SCATTERED. AND NO MATTER HOW HARD I WORK HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO GET ANY AFTER SO MANY BOATS RUN AROUND THEM. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE DEAL IS. 

TODAY I TRIED TWICE TRYING TO GET JUST A DOZEN. RUNNING THE BOAT, LOADING UP THE NET, STEERING, TURNING, HERE AND THERE, THEN HAVING TO THROW ON THEM IS A LOT LIKE W-O-R-K!  I DO IT. BUT IT JUST HASN'T WORKED OUT FOR ME.

SO TODAY I GAVE UP AFTER TWO DIFFERENT TRIES.

FISHED ''DAVE'S OLE STAND-BY'' ......FRESH DEAD SHRIMP!

SOUNDS REAL ''LOW TECH''. BUT WITHOUT LIVE BAIT, IT CATCHES!

HAD LARRY & DILLON ABOARD, PUTTING UP WITH THE CRAZINESS OF DAY ONE OF OPEN RED SNAPPER SEASON. THE BOAT RAMP WAS A TOTAL JOKE!!

WORSE THAN ANY TOURNAMENT DAY EVER!

I WAS AT THE RAMP AT 5AM.
TWO HOURS BEFORE WE WERE TO DEPART.

JUST TO MAKE SURE I HAD NO PROBLEMS PARKING MY TRUCK AND TRAILER. 

YES, I WAS 2 HOURS! EARLY.

HELL, I WAS UP AT 4AM....AND I'M DOING THIS REPORT AT 9PM, AND MY ASS IS REALLY DRAGGING AFTER A 15 HR DAY!!!!!

HERE'S WHAT WE DID. THEY WEREN'T BIG. BUT THEY WERE ''SOME WHAT'', PLENTIFUL.

WE CAUGHT,  ''BLACK JETTY SNAPPERS''.....JOKING.

NAW, WE CAUGHT A  3 - PERSON LIMIT OF BLACK DRUM. THREW BACK THE SMALL ONES.

BUT IF THEY MEASURED 14 INCHES...THEY WENT ON
I-C-E!

KEEPING 10 OR 11, OF THEM. AND LOST A FEW LARGER FISH.

THE LARGER CROAKERS ARE ALSO FLUSHING OUT OF THE RIVER, SO IT SEEMS. WE CAUGHT PLENTY. KEPT A FEW OF THE REALLY LARGER ONES.

NOTHING GLAMOROUS.  BUT WE HAD ''F-I-S-H IN THE COOLER!''

REPORTS ARE, even fishermen offshore on the reefs are catching big Bull Redfish! Now, that's a flush, for deep summer.

8/6 - busy, busy, busy....

almost thought that doing 2 hr kids trips were about over for the summer. and along comes multiples of 2 hr. kids trips aboard the JETTYWOLF.

Slammed with them, the past week, with another tomorrow!

It's the time of year I call the summer doldrums. but I still get requests for 4 or more passengers. NO, I'M NOT A PARTY BOAT! no where on my website:

-weekends, 4 people, and deep summer, doesn't go together for ''light tackle inshore fishing''. There's not enough action for FOUR people.  Come back in LATE OCTOBER for that.

TODAY I HAD A GREAT TRIP. A 10 YEAR OLD FISHAHOLIC NAMED
ELIJAH. AND HIS GRANDPA.

SINCE THE CURRENT ON A FALLING TIDE IN THE RIVER HAS BEEN NEARLY HEINOUS FOR SOME REASON (its not even a moon)  MAKING IT HARD TO CATCH THE ''PERFECT SIZE CROAKER BAITS'', I ALWAYS WANT.

WE RAN ALL THE WAY OUT TO THE BEACH AND GOT POGIES FOR BAIT.

THERE WERE SCHOOLS THE SIZE OF AN ACRE OUT THERE IN 14'.

EASILY CAUGHT MY 12.....YES, JUST A DOZEN IS ALL I NEEDED.

AND THEN WE RAN BACK IN THE RIVER.

HAD TWO REDFISH ON....BUT FOR SOME REASON ONE WASN'T HOOKED WELL , AND THE OTHER BROKE US OFF IN SOME BOTTOM STRUCTURE.

BUT WE DID GET THESE TWO BIG ''GATOR TROUT''.

7/28 - Friday & Saturday's charters....NO MORE FISHING VIDEOS!!!!!!!!

Of course I had huge plans after a great trip with my customer Traveller Bob. With big Gator Trout and a Big Bull Redfish and a Jack attack and many other lost fish.

So Friday rolls around and we head to the Jetties (inlet) to play around till the tide started to fall. I have two great guys from New Mexico aboard the JETTYWOLF.

Everything is new to them. I mean everything. But they were "quick adapters".
We caught at the jetties a few Croakers WAY too big for bait, a few Whiting, and a few small Sand trout.

This wasn't to my liking. So we ran up to where Traveller Bob and I fished and low & behold via my scanning the area with my binoculars. "THERE'S A BOAT, RIGHT THERE IN THAT AREA!"

I do not like fishing near ANYONE! 

So I dropped back and punted. We caught loads of tiny Croakers. I told my New Mexico guys...."You are now fishing for the smallest fish you can catch!"   

And to my amazement, they caught a well full of perfect 3-4" Croakers!!!
Oh we're in now! I was so happy.

We had to drop back and I wanted no parts of fishing near any other boats. Since I kept "glassing" the spot I wanted to fish with my binoculars and it looked like I'd be near what happens to be a guy who watched my video and now is sitting in the same area I fished on Monday with Traveller Bob!!!

NO MORE FISHING VIDEOS FOLKS!  

PEOPLE ARE SO DISRESPECTFUL AND KNOW WHERE I'M FISHING AND IMMEDIATELY GO STRAIGHT THERE! 
The first chance they get.

It's happened with float-rig fishing for Trout in the winter and NOW they'll do it to me in the heat of the deep dark summer too??

This area is for shit. No one can think for themselves and find their own spots. It's utterly amazing.

We lost 3 bull bull Redfish in a row.....how?  They just pulled off the hook or didn't eat the litl' Croakers down the hatch.

We had a few Jacks on and got one to the boat.

then today, 7/28 a dreaded SATURDAY.
I took Michelle and her 8 year old daughter Gabby, out for a 1/2 day.

Both total ''newbies''. but sooooo willing to learn. We fished the river and had lots of Croakers, Seabass, and a few sand trout and a small Shark. Then,we took a small live Croaker and fished it on the bottom for a bull Redfish. Michelle then realized FISHING ISN'T SO EASY!

When she caught a 17 pound REDFISH.

7/21 - New Rods got some work out

The NEW Ugly Stik Tiger rods (my new designated live Croaker rods) as seen in video below this post from yesterday.

Lost a few big fish from break-off's. And small Croakers were hard to come by.
But we eventually got this 26 pound Bull Red.

No Trout......but did have a ladyfish on the rods too.

Weekends, a 4 pak charter. No alot of wiggle room going on with what we could do, but we all stuck with the plan.

7/10 - it's all about BIG TROUT in the summer, and keeping it FUN

-it's all about BIG TROUT in the summer heat, and keeping it FUN. From catching your own bait with hook and line. Catching other fish while catching your bait.

No long boat rides. For me, not throwing a castnet, recycling hot surface water in a livewell. Everyone has fun. That's why we're out there.





There's so many way to "skin a cat".  And for me that's half the fun......
EXPERIMENTING.

While doing so, I learn new things. Plus being a pure Trout Snob, makes it real EZ.

I like to think that there's lots of free bait swimming out there.  But, really. Is there any bait that's free?  Maybe a better way of thinking about it is ''easier bait.''

I horde Shrimp. I keep and freeze all live Shrimp not used. So I can use it as dead Shrimp, another day.

Not really free. But I'll squeeze every useful piece out of a bag of fresh frozen Shrimp. I'll get my monies worth.

As a consummate cheap skate, Angler and fishing guide. I have a saying, "Never leave home without some dead shrimp".

When I fished offshore years ago. The saying then was, "Never leave home without a box of dead Cigar Minnows."

Both, can save a day. I don't care how good of a bait catcher you think you are.

Inshore, live and dead Shrimp is the mainstay of most fisherman, without a doubt. But, when it gets into the deep dark depths of Summer I get as frustrated as the next guy when it comes to all the little bait stealers. (4" Mangrove Snappers, Pinfish, Piggy Perch, Seabass, Sand Perch etc.)

But there's one little guy out there that'll eat up your Shrimp, and I don't cuss them. I'm actually wanting them.

And that's a tiny Croaker. Preferably, four inches. 

I hate running around to throw a castnet on Pogies. Just for a dozen or so.  I don't like chasing around trying to get Mullet either. Especially with customers aboard. So small Croakers are welcomed aboard the Jettywolf. Because, I use them for bait. Heck, I'm in the fishing business. And people want to fish, not ride around. People like catching Croakers, and so do I!

They are a superior Gator Trout bait. They are a superior Redfish bait. And again, I have a saying...

"Put a little Croaker where it doesn't belong and watch what will happen to it".

If you don't believe me. I have lots of Proof!

7/6 - DON'T DO THIS!!!

HERE I AM SITTING AT THE BOAT RAMP AFTER TAKING SOME KIDS FISHING. TALKING TO A FRIEND....

(TWO - 8 YEAR OLD TWINS)

THEY CAUGHT A BUCKET LOAD OF CROAKERS, AND SOME KITTY-KATS, AND WORKED THEIR GRANDPA AND ME HARD!


WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN MY BUDDY DAVE AND I AT THE DOCK SAW A BIG UGLY GHETTO CRUISER WASTE OF FIBERGLASS BOAT GO BY THROWING A 4 FOOT WAKE!!  IT YANKED MY BOAT TIED TO THE DOCK ALL OVER THE PLACE.

DAVE AND I LOOKED BACK, AND THERE'S A LITTLE FLAT BACK CANOE STYLE BOAT CALLED A GHENOE WITH 3 ADULTS IN IT.
IT HAS A TROLLING MOTOR ON THE BOW, A LITTLE MERCURY ON THE STERN AND YES 3 ADULTS IN IT!!

THEY HIT THOSE GIANT GHETTO CRUISER WAKES, ONCE, TWICE AND THE THIRD ONE HAS IT DIVE UNDER LIKE A SUBMARINE!.....IT SINKS AND FLIPS OVER IN THE RIVER JUST OUTSIDE THE BOAT RAMP DOCKS.

A LOCAL CRABBER (JAMES) COMING TO THE DOCK SEE'S THIS TOO AND HE RUNS OVER, PLUCKS ALL THREE ADULTS FROM THE WATER AND THEN DAVE AND I RUN OVER TO THEM IN MY BOAT.  THEY CHASE THE GHETTO CRUISER, (RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR WAKE!!!) AND SEE IF THEY CAN STOP THE IDIOT. DAVE AND I TIE THE GHENOE OFF TO MY BOAT, AND PICK UP STUFF OFF THE SURFACE FLOATING, AND TOW IT BACK TO THE BOAT RAMP.

DON'T BELIEVE THEY EVER STOPPED THE GHETTO CRUISER RESPONSIBLE. AND DAVE AND I PULLED THE UPSIDE DOWN GHENOE BACK TO THEM WAITING AT THE DOCK.

FLIPPING IT UPRIGHT AND BAILING THE WATER OUT.
TROLLING MOTOR, BATTERIES, DEPTH FINDER, AND 9.9 MERCURY OUTBOARD RUINED!!!

THEY WERE 100% OVER LOADED!!!!!  DON'T BELONG IN THE ST. JOHNS RIVER, THIS STYLE BOAT BELONGS WAY BACK IN SOME CREEK. 

DEFINITELY, NOT A SMART DECISION!
