SINCE, ON THE 7TH, THE BAIT SHOP FINALLY GOT 25,000 FIDDLER CRABS

BUT SOLD OUT IN 2 HOURS. ''while I was out float-rig fishing for Trout.''

SEEMS TO ME THE CRANKA CRABS WILL WORK AROUND SOME PILINGS, BUT WITH A SLOW CURRENT, SINCE THEY ARE NOT REAL HEAVY.

SLATHERED IN SAUCE, LIKE PRO-CURE GEL SCENT.

/7/2021 - JUST float-rigging for Speckled Trout

Today wasn't all that cold. And despite the forecast, wasn't all that windy till late in the day. It was pretty pleasant.

 W-A-Y, too many people around for a Thursday!!  Guess, no one really works anymore. Wait till ''socialism'' hits. Oh my gawd. You'll be out of a j-o-b, or you'll just get free money to sit on your butt, next.

We departed at 7am. And the first spot was d-e-a-d. A spot that would in years past that would be a tournament winning Trout spot!!  But, have watched it go into decline over the past few years. WHY? I have no idea.  RIVER DREDGING/DESTRUCTION?

SPOT #2: 20 plus Trout, to get 4-5 keepers in the ''fish bag''. And they only ranged from 15 to a max of 16-1/2 inches.

Too make a long story short, we fished all day for a 2 person limit of 10. So many throw back ''shorts''.  Had one yellowmouth and threw back only a few nuisance mangrove snappers and a potato chip Flounder.

This trip with Paul and his son Travis was on it's 5th ''re-schedule'' do to them wanting to Sheepshead fish with fiddler crabs. But, there has been any fiddler crabs, and each day we discussed going was 20 plus knots of wind. (they are local)

Non-locals, will get the day they pick. I'm tired of bouncing people around and loosing days. So, if you don't care about the weather. Neither will I. We'll just have to do the best we can with what we're given, and the date you choose.

HELPFUL HINTS FOR WINTER FISHING:

- GO ON A WEEKDAY, IF YOU CAN. MONDAY THRU WEDS.

- BOOK IN ADVANCE AT LEAST A WEEK, SO WE CAN LOOK AT THE WEATHER

- SHOW UP ON TIME! 

- DRESS FOR SUCCESS

WELL, I BELIEVE THEY WERE 13 & 16. AND WERE GREAT TO HAVE ABOARD.

THE ORIGINAL DAY WE WERE GONNA GO WAS ON 12/26, BUT THE ''WEATHER GUESSERS'', SAID IT WAS GOING TO BE 15 KTS FROM THE NW, AND BURNING C-O-L-D.

AS IT TURNED OUT, THE WEATHER GUESSERS WERE WRONG. AND 12/26 WASN'T THAT BAD AT ALL.

SO WE SHOVED OFF AT 7AM ON SUNDAY INSTEAD. IT WAS COLD, 30 DEGREES AND VERY LIGHT WINDS, AND SUNNY.

MIKE SAID, HE'D LIKE TO TRY FOR SHEEPSHEAD.

BEING THERE'S NO FIDDLER CRABS IN THE COLD WEATHER. I OPTED FOR $20 WORTH OF BLUE CRABS TO USE, AND BROKE OUT THE CLEAVER AND CHUNKED THEM INTO PIECES.

WE MADE A LONG RUN TO A FAITHFUL SHEEPSHEAD SPOT......

AND NEVER HAD A SHEEPSHEAD!!!!!  ONLY TOADFISH.  I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT.

THEN WE WENT TO A AREA WHERE I'VE BEEN CATCHING BLACK DRUM AND SHEEPSHEAD.

OH, WE HAD DRUM ALRIGHT. TWO 10 INCHERS!

AND MORE TOADFISH. WE STILL HAD PLENTY OF CRABS, AND IT DIDN'T SEEM TO MATTER IF THEY WERE PURE GOLD. NO ONE WANTED THEM, BECAUSE NO ONE WAS THERE?

OKAY, ON TO A SPECKLED TROUT SPOT, A GOOD ONE....''THAT HASN'T PRODUCED MUCH, BUT IT WAS CLOSE TO USE.''

HOURS, OF FLOAT-RIGGING LIVE SHRIMP. HARDLY A BITE, SHRIMP DYING OF BOREDOM. A MANGROVE SNAPPER......

THEN FINALLY, A B-I-G 5 POUND SPECKLED TROUT.

OUR TIDE DIED OFF LIKE A LIGHT SWITCH, SO N-E-X-T ? BECAUSE WE STILL HAD A WELL FULL OF SHRIMP.

DIDN'T GO TO THE JETTIES, SHOULD I HAVE?  MAYBE. BUT LAST TIME I WAS THERE IT WAS PRETTY DEAD ALSO.

YESTERDAYS ''BIG FISH'',CAUGHT BY A DEAD SERIOUS LOCAL 10 YEAR OLD ''ANGLER'', WHO REMINDED ME....OF ''ME''. 

HE WAS ALL BUSINESS. NO FOOLING AROUND. A 100% PLEASURE TO HAVE ABOARD THE JETTYWOLF.

THANK GOODNESS WE HAD HIM. WE STRUGGLED ALL DAY TO GET INTO TROUT, SHEEPSHEAD OR BLACK DRUM.  THIS WAS HIS FIRST SHEEPSHEAD EVER.

WOW...WHAT A WACKO ENDING TO 2020. 

ON THE 21st, I BOOKED A TRIP FOR 2 PEOPLE AT 10AM IN THE MORNING WHILE GOING TO THE BAIT SHOP TO DO A BAIT CHECK.

''THEY WERE FROM CALIFORNIA''   

I RECEIVED THEIR $100 DEPOSIT, HAD A FUN CONVERSATION WITH THEM. 

AND GENERALLY WAS EXCITED, BECAUSE IT WAS TO BE A GLORIOUS WEATHER DAY. COLD IN THE MORNING, BUT LIGHT WINDS AND LOTS OF SUN  🌞😎

SENT THEM A CONFIRMATION E-MAIL, WHEN I GOT HOME. WAS AT THE BAIT SHOP THE NEXT MORNING, BEFORE THEY OPENED. AND AT THE RAMP AND IN THE WATER AT 6:10am. 

OH...IT WAS NICE. COLD BUT NICE. 7am CAME AND WENT, OUR DEPARTURE TIME.  I CALLED THEM 3 TIMES! THE 3rd TIME LEFT A MESSAGE.

NO CALL BACK, NOTHING!

THE 1st '''NO SHOW''' I'VE HAD IN 10 YEARS❗❗❗

IT'S KINDA FUNNY HOW I GET TREATED.  A PRIVATE, PERSONAL FISHING CHARTER IS JUST THAT, A PERSONAL SERVICE.

YOU AND I ARE GOING TO SPEND THE WHOLE DAY TOGETHER.  I'M NOT SAYING WE'LL BECOME LIFE LONG BUDDIES, PEN PALS OR ANYTHING.

ALTHOUGH, I DO HAVE CUSTOMERS THAT FEEL LIKE FAMILY TO ME.

 ALL CHARTERS WILL BE 6 HR DAYS.  THAT'S HOW I ALWAYS DID IT IN THE PAST.

WE NEED MORE TIME❗❗  BECAUSE, YOU MAY HAVE A EXPECTATION. BUT ONLY WANTED TO FISH THE LEAST COST TYPE OF DAY.

I'VE HAD THIS HAPPEN 3 TIMES THIS MONTH ALREADY. BUT WE NEEDED MORE TIME.....''BECAUSE YOU PICKED THE DAY, NOT ME'' 

SO, I HAVE NOW ROUNDED OFF EVERYTHING, TO A 6 HR. DAY. THE WAY I'VE DONE IT IN THE PAST. AND ANYTHING AFTER 6 HRS. IS $100 A HOUR, AFTERWARDS.

12/19 - NOT a great day!! (UPDATED ammo shortages❓)

 WOW......10am and not a decent fish in the boat❗❗❗❗❗

it was cold, it was windy as hell, we float-rigged, we bottom fished, we cast jig-n-shrimp, we even went to the jetties. We did have a handful of small specks at the jetties and a 10 inch black drum and a few cigar sized whiting.

AND NOW AS I WRITE THIS....SUNDAY IS CALM AND WARM. Y-E-S, THIS IS MY FISHING LIFE.    ''I DON'T PICK'EM!''

But as we sat there with WAVES busting over the rocks, hanging on anchor by a thread and a hope, getting covered in salt spray, barely being able to stand straight as the boat bobbed all over...

It was JETTYWOLF fishing at it's finest, (NOT from a lack of trying) with not much going on.

So, Marcos my one crew member for the day from Minnesota didn't seem to mind the weather at all. 

I was about at my "wits end!"

With the tide finally slowing we went back up in the river at 1pm and I said, ""this is it...doo or die!""

I wanted him to at least have a fish fry, for him and his wife and who every else. He said he'd like to have some fish to eat.

We pulled up on the spot, and it was 

game on!

Speckled Trout, and Yellowmouth Trout...almost every cast!

Most of the Specks were short, that's why I love me some good ole Yellers.

So tired of the specks always being 14 7/8ths inch long. And we didn't have all the damn bait stealers we had earlier this morning.

59 degree water and the shit fish are still on the rampage in that river.

Holy smokes it gets old, just feeding pinfish after pinfish. 

I got myself another fish bag just like the other one I have. It came super fast and is a bit different. But that doesn't matter. It's almost identical.

So, now I re-scheduled Sunday and Tuesday for weather issues, and because one customer wants it warm, no wind, and hopes to fish fiddler crabs for Sheepshead...""and there is NO fiddlers to be had at the bait shop""".

We could use Blue Crab, but what a mess and costly that would be.

NEXT UP is a Family trip 3 adults and a 10 year old on Weds.
