Had Aaron aboard again. The US Navy gave him a 4 day weekend. So he used Monday at noon, to fish aboard the Jettywolf.
Y-E-S. A noon departure.
Water temps at the Jetties still very low. So low that coming to find out all the Reds, Drum, and Sheepshead are W-A-Y offshore.
Had 2 unknown fella's pull up to the boat ramp, tell me the fog was so thick they bagged it. Were planning on going offshore. Because last week they wacked the Drum, reds, and Sheepshead out on the Ponte Vedra Grounds REEF. That's 15 or so miles offshore south east of the Jetties!!!!!!!!
And then gave me their entire bucket of fresh fiddler crabs. Which was great. I brought 5 dozen live shrimp and a bucket of dead shrimp and some frozen clams.
I thought I heard all our
'January Black Drum' are out there. Because they don't seem to be at the Jetties.
January or February!
W-o-w, that cold we had sure did put a whoop-ass on the river!
Aaron and I departed the dock at noon and the tide was still high. So we explored the Jetties. (FIRST TIME IN WEEKS, I'VE TURNED THAT DIRECTION)
We didn't make it far. The FOG was super thick. So bad a huge ship passed within a 100 yards and we couldn't see it. Could surely hear it as it laid on the fog horn constantly.
The air turned really cold! and between the boat ramp and the start of the south Jetty. The water temp was
DROPPING!!!
So, we turned around and headed past the Dames Point Bridge. YEP...and as we went,
the water temp climbed and climbed.
By the time the tide turned, way down there. We had a
NINE DEGREE WATER TEMP DIFFERENCE between the
high tide water at the Jetties and the
low tide water south of the Dames Point Bridge.
W-O-W!
Needless to say, the low tide this week is later and later in the day. So, it was a good day to fish it late.
NO ONE AROUND. Seemed everyone did the
"Willy Weekender" deal start at sun-up and were all gone by noon to three.
The east breeze laid down,
and it was GREAT!!! for us.
Started the day playing with the
Nursery school Sheepshead. Aaron lost a few massive fish (a huge sheepshead, a Redfish and maybe another Sheepshead)
"He's learning." He has the disease!
The fishing addiction!
He got redemption and got a big Sheepshead at 6 plus pounds. His largest ever.
We float-rig fished the live shrimp and "vertical fished" the fiddler crabs.
Didn't get any BIG reds to the boat. But caught a good share of Trout, small Yellowmouths, and enough Sheepshead.
We split the day up and tried to do as much of the 2 different types of fishing as we could till the BUGS ran us out of one spot and we hit the dock in the dark. And used my big LED handheld lights to clean fish by. I backed the boat into it's shed at 8pm. Yeah, not common for me. But, so worth it!
