10/2 - Jacksonville's Epic Flood Tide; "Solution"

I HATE USING 12 OUNCES FISHING THE RIVER ON THESE EPIC FALL/WINTER JACKSONVILLE HIGH TIDES.

I'M "ACTUALLY" A LIGHT TACKLE GUY......GUIDE.  SO IF THAT MEANS SMALLER FISH, AND MORE FUN, WITH LESS FRUSTRATION.

SO BE IT!

WE ENDED UP WITH A WHOLE BOX OF FISH:
TROUT
DRUM
REDFISH
WITH ZERO HEADACHES ON A SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY DAY!!

IT WAS COOL, WINDY, BUT SO MUCH FUN AND VERY PRODUCTIVE.

PAUL FROM NORTH DAKOTA HAD FUN, AND HOPE TO SEE HIM AGAIN.
HE HAD A GALLON BAG FULL OF FRESH FISH FRY WHEN HE LEFT.

9/30 - FG or GT knot fascination or obsession??

If you pay attention here at all, you know I did a video about the strongest Mono to braid connection there is and it's called the FG or sometimes the GT knot.

Where as you're making a "chinese finger trap" with the braid around the mono.

YES, it can be done with out a "tool"......but come on we need to make this FUN, right?

You may have even watched my video on the DaiichiSeiko knot assist tool 2.0

But in the mean time, never satisfied and curious as all hell, I bought another tool to make the same exact knot. Just a bit different.

And here it is "above".  Did I bite off more than I can chew?  No not really, this video really helped as I couldn't really read the Japanese direction the Boiling Tackle Weaver 55 tool came with and for days hunted up this video and now finally successful.

The point is or the question I'm asking is, "Would any of you (my blog readers or Youtube subscribers) ever attempt to learn this knot and make the investment in these "helper tools"?

Not all that interested? Or what you do now satisfies your needs? Too confusing? Takes too much time to learn?  You're not that "deep" into fishing knowledge?

Well folks, I'M DEEP.  It's all I do. That's the reason I'm the fishing guide and your not, I guess. I see knots like this that directly apply to me and "I have to know them."  Am I cheating a bit?  Yeah sure I am. Because I love gadgets, first off. And those Japanese are so damn Gadget Proficient, I find it amazing.

By you being here, and by watching this video or at least 5 seconds of it, satisfies me.  WHY?

Because I have opened your eyes to yet one more thing you won't get on some local forum, or radio talk show.

You've been EXPOSED.

And also know a little more about what makes the JETTYWOLF tick.....

EBAY TACKLE DEAL of the week, A Jettywolf Moment

-TROUT
-REDS
-FLOUNDER
-JACKS
-LADYFISH
-SPANISH MACS
-YELLOWMOUTH TROUT (Weakfish)

all eat a well presented "Micro jig & Slab spoon"....and you just can't have enough, of them when fishing the river in the deeper, swifter waters, with snags and hang-ups. VERSATILITY aboard the Jettywolf, and any can do it.

It's "active fishing, with a flair". Something a bit different.  Something I strive for over starring at the rod tips bottom fishing. Like Float-rig fishing, I have developed tackle, rigs  and techniques to help my customers have fun doing it.

9/6 - PRE-LABOR DAY FISHING?? - A Jettywolf Moment

Getting a little tired of bottom fishing.....NEXT DAY OUT, back to Float-rig fishing  & Slab spoon jigging!

What is Float rig fishing you say?  Well, reserve your day by calling me, or emailing me
904-642-9546  or  charter@captdaves.com  and you'll find out!

Float-rig fishing, is inter-active, best done with two persons, it targets Trout, Redfish, & Flounder with live shrimp for bait. Using "VERY" light tackle, drifting shrimp over structure at a prescribed depth in our no lack of current in the river and at the inlet.

Right now, besides targeting those species. You'll also get plenty of Jacks and Ladyfish action too.

8/25 - River Tackle Testers : Episode two, with Jack

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JACK

It was two exciting days.
Thanks for the great time!

Tuesday, August 25, 2015

8/25 - Episode 2 of "Just Jack" coming soon.

Here's episode number one....remember this?

Well, I had Jack aboard again today with his wife, and today was Jack's 65 birthday and all I can tell ya is.......Holy Shit!

I'll be working on the video "EPISODE NUMBER TWO", and what a day it was.

Just keep in mind the words, "TACKLE TEST".

Here's a small......sneak peek:

So Stay tuned!

8/25 - Big Red slow down & drift up a attack!

BAIT, always a problem when not using just bait shop bought Live Shrimp. Had some stash of Pogies barely left in a bag in the cooler. So we went hunting, this morning.

First, Mullet....yep, caught 5 larger ones, that was it.
Stop over at the Croaker spot, and we filled the live bait well with some, to use as bait later.

Catching Croakers is FUN, and EZ, compared to running the beach for Pogies when Pogies are "here today, gone tomorrow."

Had to time the tide as I have been doing, and when the moons aligned with Venus the rods bowed over!  (But today we had a nuisance.....big sail Cats.)

So after the Bull Reds, we headed to the inlet....."ahh, the Mayport Jetties!!"

No sooner we got out there, and I spied huge marks on my sounder. I told Mike, "these are SHARKS! Do you wanna try for one?"

He said, "yeah lets try it.and if we get one and it bites us off or what ever no biggy."

So I tossed out a live Croaker, N-O-T on a usual shark rig, but just on the Redfish rig we were using earlier.  We made some drifts on the rising tide, in the clean green water where the marks on my sounder were.

Croaker number one ...... plucked right off the hook with just a quick bend of the rod.

Croaker number two......Slam dunked! Rod bowed in the shape of a horse shoe, drag smoked, and about 50 yards away a leap, spin, and a huge splash. And I even saw the 8 ounce sinker go flying thru the air.

The leader was broke right off the rig. But the rest was intact.

"Okay, so that's what the sharks do.", I told Mike and his wife.

We came, we saw, and since it was getting late, we headed back to the dock.  Of course, if I had changed rigs to my 400 pound Shark leaders, we would have possibly been on a hour and a half battle. But that's not what we wanted. Mike just wanted a show and tell...and he got it.

They are out there folks, and almost any tackle may not be big enough!

Accept, I have tackle for them.

And if you have the SALT....I'm always up for it.

8/23 - Sure glad I had a "stash"

Of course......no bait readily accessible today. In less than 24 hrs. The Pogies moved and it was all "hush-hush" were they went.

So, I wasted and good amount of fuel and time, against my better judgement, looking for a batch, so I could at least renew the "stash" of dead ones I kept from yesterday and put in my cooler.

Well, those Bull Redfish ate the dead Pogies as well if not better than the live ones.

They're chewin' just good enough to make it interesting, on the spot I'm fishing. But it's not a full bore mega-spawn congregation, just yet,

Also had just one Jack Crevalle jig fishing this morning. And as usual, lost a few bull Redfish, too.

Oh well may have to supplement the "stash" with Croakers. Cut bait or alive.

8/22 - Up river, Pogie toting

Mayport Boat  Ramp - 7:30am

Rounding South Jetty with the rest of the "live baiters" 7:45am

On the beach 15' of water, 48 other boats, two throws of the cast net (8 footer) and filled the bait well with live Pogies, 8:00am

EEEEEERRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrt, STOP, what do I see?

NO SURF!  That's right folks. ZERO SURF!

we drifted into 4 foot of water, and we weren't in danger of pitch-poling, flipping over, and meeting a very ugly demise.

there was NO SURF!

This is totally un-called for. The Atlantic Ocean never ever looks like that place on the other side of the state called the "Gulf of Mexico". It was sooooooo calm I could have beached the boat, got out, walked over to the nearest bikini girl, did a selfie with her, walked back and got in the boat and drove away!

OMG!

All I could think about was how nice it would have been to be casting a top water plug and pursuit of all those BIG Speckled Trout that live in the surf all summer long that no one but the Pier Trout Masters, get to catch, from their high and dry and comfortable perch!  With all the Pogies around, there might have been some GATORS lurking.

With dreams of beach Trout danced in my head as I put the net away, we headed back towards the jetties, made what I call a long run up river. Where there wasn't a single breeze. The air was hot, humid and it was like fishing in the jungle. (Another reason I love fishing the jetties.....it's usually cooler than fishing in the river during the summer doldrums.)

The falling tide current was blasting as usual where we stopped. A ole Bull Red spot. And no one was around me. I liked that.  6 OUNCES, would barely hold a single little Pogie on the bottom in 33 feet of water. But I told my crew of Dave and Dane, that when that sinker lays like an old dog on the porch, the tide will be "go-time" for a Bull Redbass bite. aka: Large Jumbo Redfish for you non-Jax folks.

As usual we got knocked around by too many passing tug boats. Waked by "willy-inconsiderate weekender" who came way too close to us. And then it happened........

The tide slowed!

And "DOUBLE HEADERS" ensued!

28-29 pounds they all were. Then, the bite quit as soon as it started, and the current went damn near slack. (stereo-typical)

t was hot, the boat was a mess of "Male Redfish happiness", so we ran back to the jetties.
Ahhhhhhhhh.......the cool breeze, The non stagnant air. What a joy!

We tried a Flounder spot with the live Pogies we had, but there really was no incoming tide yet. So we pulled stakes and headed to the inside end of the North and South Jetty, dropping Pogies on a controlled drift.......NADA!

By then it was 12:30pm and my crew was tired, wore out and needing a nap since they drove down from Georgia very early this morning. So we headed back to the dock.

As I bid farewell till next time, I cleaned up around the boat put everything away and was thinking.....

"will I ever see the Atlantic Ocean surf line fish'able ever again?"

Will I ever be able to catch a summer time surf Trout?  I know they are out there all summer long. It's the one way of Trout fishing we Atlantic Coasters don't get to enjoy.......like the Gulf Coasters do.

(If you don't know this, the Gulf of Mexico is like a giant pond. Many days slick calm, and fishing the beach without any 4-6' waves crashing is common place.)

Some day, some day. I too, when I grow up will be a Gulf Coaster.....Trout catcher......some day.
