4/23 - ole school never goes out of style

SPRING HAS SPRUNG, (doesn't matter what the calendar says)

As a Angler, my seasons are dictated by the weather, and what the fish are doing. March 20th may have been the first day of Spring for the landlubber crowd. But for me, spring just arrived last week. Because while on a charter we caught the first Spanish Mackerel of the year. Yep, the Spaniards arriving is the kick-off in my book. And should be in yours also.

Ninety percent of the time, I'll catch my first Spanish Mackerel at the Mayport Jetties. But not this year! We were Trout fishing with float-rigs and live shrimp near Blount Island in the St. Johns river when the Spanish ate our live shrimp.

Another oddity was way back on the first week of March, we caught the first Jack Crevalle of the year and the first Pompano. Guess these fish didn't get the Memo. They also were caught way inland from the Ocean.

So, now that the Spanish have arrived. What's the big deal you ask?

How about taking the Kids out to the Mayport Jetties on a rising tide and doing the Spring time "right of passage", trolling..

A lost art, locally these days.  Hardly no one does it any longer. Many new boaters/fisherman, never seen the lines of boats outside the inlets years ago trolling and loading coolers full of the Spanish Macs, that used to happen each year around this time. Again, it was a blast. And everyone was in on it, years ago.

But this fishing guide doesn't forget about the ole school ways. If I get a boat load of kids, there's almost nothing more fun to do for a few hours than troll up a mess of Spanish, Bluefish, and Jacks. No one has to be a expert. Just start reeling when one is on.

The ole school way is to troll planers and spoons. At a very fast clip. Making quick turns. Known as "turning and burning", on the hungry schools of fish.

"JETTYWOLF LIVE" - 4/19/18

had JaxJoe aboard with his wife and friend, aboard the Jettywolf on a blowing, but sunny day at the Mayport Jetties and in the St. Johns River, Jacksonville, Florida.

We float-rigged as we call it locally. Using a "slip float" rig. Then later we just bottom fished over rocks for 5 - Sheepshead.

USING ONLY LIVE SHRIMP (purchased from B&M bait & Tackle, Atlantic Beach FL)

Spring is full swing as the Green Scourge fish have arrived. Nasty Bluefish. Spanish Mackerel have arrived, so has Jack Crevalles.

Check out my website for all charter fishing info. The 26' Jettywolf is the safest, largest, inshore/coastal full-time charter boat in the area. www.captdaves.com - since 1996

As mentioned in the Video:

**Long Reach fish releasing tool. (well worth it in my book!)

**Filletzall Blades (goes in any one handed reciprocating saw such as the best Battery version is Makita, and a good corded model is a Ridgid or Makita)

**Dexter Outdoors 7" Sofgrip fillet knife w/ dexguard coating (what I believe is the best Dexter fish knife made)

4/16 - Beware!!!!! NO MORE FB FOR ME.

Beware!

If you didn't know all this by now. You must live in a cave.....hahaha

I'm proud to be a FB drop-out. The entire platform never did a single thing for me. Never a single charter booking. Nothing but trolls "disliking" my video's about someone else's fun charter day.

Then, I go to completely delete everything on FB and they make it so hard, I gave up. So all I got to do was to "close" my account.

I'll be working on a complete DELETION, still.

"JETTYWOLF LIVE" - 4/9/18 - St. Johns River Fishing

TODAY WAS LEWIS VISITING JAX FOR A FEW DAYS OF FISHING ABOARD THE JETTYWOLF WITH CAPT DAVE. LEWIS IS A CAPT. DAVE'S SPORT FISHING YOUTUBE CHANNEL SUBSCRIBER. IMPRESSED WITH THE JETTYWOLF, AND WANTED TO CATCH AND KEEP SOME FISH, WE PLANNED ON TWO DAYS.

IT ALMOST LOOKED LIKE WE'D BARELY GET ONE DAY OF FISHIN' IN. THIS FICKLE SPRING WEATHER HAD US WAITING OUT SOME MORNING DOWN POURS. BUT, LUCK WOULD HAVE IT. IT WAS A WONDERFUL AFTERNOON.

NOT SO LUCKY ON DAY TWO. BIG RAIN, WIND AND EVEN HAIL AT THE JETTYWOLF'S FISH CAMP IN THE MORNING. IT WAS OKAY THOUGH. WE CANCELLED THE NIGHT BEFORE. AND LEWIS WILL BE BACK IN THE FALL.

BOXED A BUNCH OF TROUT, ONE SHEEPSHEAD , AND RELEASED A BIG REDFISH. ALL ESSENTIALLY WITHIN A FEW MILES OF THE DOCK.

"JETTYWOLF LIVE" - 3/23/2018

IT'S SPRING TIME!

AND THE BIG BLACK DRUM ARE IN THE RIVER. BUT FIRST I TOOK MY CREW TO THE INLET FOR SOME REAL FAST ACTION ON GOOD SIZE WHITING. WE KEPT AND I CLEANED 55 OF THEM!! BIRTHDAY GIRL CHELSEA WAS THE "HOT ROD" ALL DAY AS OUR ONLY LADY ANGLER. AND IT WAS HER BIRTHDAY. SHE CAUGHT THE FIRST AND THE LARGEST OF THE DAY.

AFTER FILLING THE FISH BOX WITH WHITING FOR A FISH FRY. WE RAN UP RIVER AND DROPPED 4 LINES TO THE BOTTOM.....WITH STILL, THE WHITING RIGS!! A 30# LEADER AND A MUSTAD 3407 2/0 HOOK. AS THE CURRENT/TIDE CHANGED CHELSEA DROPPED TO THE BOTTOM AND INSTANTLY HOOKED UP THIS FISH, A 30- POUND BLACK DRUM ON THE LIGHT LEADER AND HOOK. WE ALL ENCOURAGED HER TO REALLY TAKE IT EASY ON THE FISH BECAUSE IT COULD EASILY BE LOST ON THE LIGHT RIGGING.

3/25 - Oh how the weatherman missed it this one!

Fished a 1/2 day on Saturday and it was just too nice!  Yeah too nice. A few Trout, a few Whiting and that was it.

Today on Sunday it was blowing like all hell from the west. Not a great direction. and at least hard enough to make the ocean a soup sandwich. The Jetties were miserable.

Had Del & Carlos aboard. We fished for Whiting for some fish fry fillets and I kept moving all over trying to find larger ones, like on Friday. But no dice in all that west wind.

So after 12-15 worth keeping we went up in the river from the jetties.

Broke out the really "special baits" and bottom fished to see about a Drum or Redfish, on the same spot where we just caught the 30 pounder on Friday.

Well, we had a decent bite as the tide slowed, but no hook-up. Then we got another.

see that ship in the far distance?  here comes trouble!

Del got to fight this fish on my Jigging Master WIKI reel. Level wind, lever drag, MEGA awesome, MEGA expensive reel!!

But as he started to get the fish off the bottom, and it was really big, a security boat came over to us and said, ''you have to move, that ship is coming right in here.'' We were so busy, none of us even saw it. I started the motor, pulled forward as Del fought the fish, pulled the anchor a bit. The Del had the fish boat side,  I lip gaffed it. dropped the fish on the deck, finished pulling the anchor up, just as two tugs were moving this ship towards us!!!!!

we got out of the way just in time, I guess. And we got what we came for!

the Black Drum crushed my 30 pound boga-grip scale, but I estimated it at approx. 50 POUND range.

It took a little while to recoup, as we had to move around to find a place in the wind and current to get these photos, clean up, pack everything up, and head in to clean yet again a super ''clean'' parasite free Drum.

Again, the Makita one-handed reciprocating saw, with a 12 inch FILLETZALL scalloped blade made short work of this big momma!

Del, hopefully will send me a lot more photos and maybe even video of the cleaning/fillet job, that if I wasn't on TEAM FILLETZALL, I wouldn't have wanted to even mess with these big Drum.  But, because I am using them, on these very 'clean' Black Drum my customers can take home their catch and cook up the fish.

I'M SUPER BOOKED-UP, AND HAVE NO WEEKENDS AVAILABLE FOR AWHILE, LET ALONE MANY WEEKDAYS.  SO, I'M INTO MID APRIL NOW. SO GET WITH ME ASAP FOR ANY WEEKEND DATES.

3/23 - ANOTHER BIRTHDAY GIRL

HAD A 4  PERSON CREW. AND ONE WAS CHELSEA.
THE ONLY WOMAN.
SO YA KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS....

-FIRST FISH
-BIGGEST FISH

HIT THE JETTIES AND BOTTOM FISHED. THE GOOD SIZED WHITING ARE INSANE OUT THERE.

CAUGHT AND KEPT ""55"".....YES 55, I CLEANED!

AFTER THE WHITING FEST WE WENT UP IN THE  RIVER AND BOTTOM FISHED THE FIRST OF THE RISING TIDE.

AND OF COURSE, GUESS WHAT HAPPENED?
CHELSEA GOT HERE BIRTHDAY FISH!

A BEAUTIFUL 30 POUND BLACK DRUM THAT WAS  CLEAN AS ALL HELL AND EVEN HAD A "COPPER" COLOR TO IT.

SHE FOUGHT THE FISH FOR DAMN NEAR A HOUR IN 45 FEET OF WATER WITH RIPPING CURRENT ON A 2/0 MUSTAD HOOK AND 40 POUND LEADER. SAME RIG WE USED FOR WHITING.

WE KEPT THE DRUM BECAUSE IT WAS SUCH A CLEAN FISH AND IT WAS CUT AND FILLETED IN MINUTES WITH MY MAKITA AND FILLETZALL BLADE.

VIDEO COMING SOON

HER DAD CHRIS LOST A SMALLER DRUM TO A BROKE LEADER. AND HER BROTHER CAUGHT A KEEPER RIVER SEABASS ON A SMALL DEAD CRAB.

I'VE BEEN GOING ALMOST EVERYDAY. BUT THIS DAY WAS SPECIAL AND NOT PERFECT WEATHER WISE. AND IT WAS JUST PERFECT ENOUGH THAT IT'S WORTH TALKING ABOUT.

I'VE BEEN OUT ON BLOWING COLD DAYS, RESCHEDULED BECAUSE OF RAINING DAYS. BUT THAT SPRING TIME FOR YA.

"TOOLS OF THE TRADE ON THE JETTYWOLF" - 3/19/2018

Buy your Dexter-Russell 4" Net Knife here on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2FWfvmB

Following-up from my last video: https://youtu.be/v36BkQ_HKv8
where as a hard on stuff fisherman, I just couldn't find the perfect Multi-tool. And one I really liked was a P.O.S. that broke cutting a small zip tie!

Then there's folding knives....That's a whole different subject.
So, I decided to give a "fixed" blade Dexter Russell 4" Net Knife a try.

-Cost is a huge factor (I'm not a rich Youtuber) or Fishing Guide.
- Size, and carry'bility. (spell check is telling me that's not a real word)
- SIMPLICITY! a must
- Quality.....still to be seen. "But I believe, I wanna believe!""

But as I said. I have "other implements" on their way. And will do a show and tell, then.

While I'm here and you're hopefully reading the "VIDEO DESCRIPTION".....let me give you the link to the FILLETZALL BLADES, that can also be found nice and EZ on Amazon also. http://amzn.to/2G7zMc8 For you Anglers who want to "FEAR NO FISH"

3/10 - 1st JACK

Spring is sooooo, right around the corner. Even though it was quite cool out there today.

This is a "here's yer sign", fish!

1st Jack Crevalle was caught today. By 12 year old Jay. On his 1st fishing trip ever. And his dad's 1st fishing trip ever! They both were 100% NEW!

It kicked his butt on the float-rig.

I believe we're about a week behind last year for, for the 1st Jack. Earliest for me that I can remember is March 2nd or 3rd.

This was one rough looking fish, though. Beat up as all hell.

Afterwards we went to the Mayport Jetties and mustered up a bunch of Whiting on the bottom with FISHBITES, Shrimp pieces, and small pieces of Squid.

----------------------------------------------------------------

HERE'S SOME WEATHER SHOT AT THE BOAT RAMP IN THE MORNINGS, BEFORE CUSTOMERS ARRIVE, FROM THIS PAST WEEK.
Dang, it's COLD!

LAST TUESDAY MORNING AT SUN-UP....cool looking sky.
