6/6 - IN THE RAIN....ALL DAY!

WELL THE FORECAST WAS DEAD ON.

IT RAINED ALL DAY ON TUESDAY.

BUT I HAD A TOUGH COUPLE ABOARD (RANDY AND HIS WIFE SHARON)

TALK ABOUT DIE-HARDS!!

WE FLOAT-RIG FISHED ALL DAY LONG, ALL OVER FROM THE RIVER TO EVEN VENTURING TO THE NORTH.

THE B&M, LIVE SHRIMP WERE SUPER NICE AND FRISKY.
BUT ONLY GOT THE ATTENTION OF JACKS!  AND A FEW LADYFISH,WHILE FISHING THE ""GREAT SALTY BAY"" CALLED THE ST. JOHNS.

EVERY SPOT WE WENT MY CREW CAUGHT JACKS.

NO TROUT, NO FLOUNDER, ESPECIALLY NO TROUT, NO REDS, NO SHEEPSHEAD.

JUST JACKS!

FROM 12 INCHERS TO THIS DRAG SCREAMER THAT RANDY FOUGHT FROM UNDER A DOCK.........""TWICE"".

IT WAS A BATTLE FROM HELL ON LIGHT TACKLE. THIS JACK DIDN'T WANT TO BE CAUGHT IN THE WORST WAY AND TRIED TO BREAK OFF. BUT EVERYTHING HELD.

- NEXT UP: FRIDAY SPANISH MACKEREL FISHING? THEN, SUPPOSED TROUT FISHING?

YEAH, I'M A MAGICIAN. THAT'S WHAT FISHING GUIDES ARE.
HAHAHAHAHA........

6/5 - as usual in summer

As usual in summer, its a tough road to hoe inshore on the weekends. (especially Holiday weekends)

I'm back to "float rig fishing"....live shrimp. The bait has been beautiful.  Yes, there's only certain spots that really produce good fish, if we have the right tides.

Bottom fishing has been very slow. Bull reds are a possibility in between all the stingrays.

Here's a few pics of the last few days:

Black Drum from jetties

Float-rigged Flounder

More to come. Some Spanish Mac trolling class and float-rig how-to class coming up on Friday. Teaching a local guy.

Just need to run into more Trout, and get slick calm days for taking the fishing bow out on the reefs to hunt Spadefish. And while there..."slow jig."

6/2 - NOT far enough....One B-I-G fish

Yesterday had 3 great guys as a crew.  Was supposed to be 4. But the 4th punked out.

Headed straight to the near by Shrimp boats outside the inlet. Had bait already and was ready to get some line burner hook ups on big Blacktip sharks, to warm my crews muscles.

.........at least that was the plan.

2 shrimp boats later and NOT A SINGLE TAKER!!!!!!!!!!!
are you kidding me?

Life in bazzaro world Florida. Can it get any more wacko?
Yes, folks, this is what I have to put up with. This is my life.
NEVER EVER, is there a "certain".

So, off we go in search of live Pogies for the well. Okay, I get those in 7 feet of water. Not a big deal.

The ocean was slick flat calm. So I put in a set of ledges just short of the Pablo Grounds area offshore. And we take off.

This is the first time I have Pogies in the well for live bait, offshore. I'm thinking we're gonna have some good action.

We get to the set of ledges and there's people all over. Not on the spot...."TILL I TOSS A MARKER JUG ON IT"", then it's swarm, swarm, swarm!

2-3 other boats just start fishing the area because of my jug!

We just drift fish. The Pogies produce DIDDLY SQUAT. Can you believe that?
One fella uses some Madia jigs and he's catching fish. Not super fish, but more than live Pogies.

So, myself and the other two. We switch to bucktails and live Pogies. Yep, not much. A few Seabass...

Morale:  THESE JIGS WORK!!!  Just drop and vary the distance off the bottom with the rod. Drift these up and down off the bottom.
Oh yeah...CUDA'S LOVE THEM!  That's what the big fish hook up was on one of these jigs.   NO bait required.

We catch damn near nothing worth keeping at this "close in" locale. The sharks came in and were eating everything.

So we left. And headed back inshore to fish the jetties/inlet.

We get there and a sure "HERE'S YER SIGN" is No one is around!
We get no action at all.

I head up into the river. Last of the rising tide. I go to a spot where I've caught lots of over sized Redfish.

And we get........

25 pounds worth of KICK ASS, on light tackle......."using a live Pogie!"

Arron's 1st ever BULL REDFISH.

The skies were getting dark to the west and the radar showed a storm coming.
So we beat feet back to the dock.

What a day.

Guess ya got to go at least 20 miles offshore to get anything decent.  Maybe another slick day.......

Saw this coming in the inlet, heading into the Navy base. Kinda cool.

--------------------------------------------------------------

In the plans/works. Via Frattle welding here in Jax.
Working on a plan to get something similar to this:

for my boat, the JETTYWOLF.  Basically, a "double the size" of a regular T-top.
But not a T-top.  REALLY can't wait.  Wish it was tomorrow. But probably a month away.

5/28 - missed by inches....

Offshore again today.....ride out was okay, not great. went just 8 miles. (not far enough) Looked for bait on the beach, and could have spent way too long searching. So we pressed on.

Never said I was some expert offshore guy. But two days in a row, proves to be kinda abusive on the body. Bottom fishing offshore sure is a ton of work.

But, the bites so limited in the river and inlet. At least, on a close reef there's always a chance at something decent.

Yesterday, took Mom & Dad out a belated Mother's Day fishing trip. Mom caught all kinds of small fish. While I did only "jigging" with super light tackle.
I caught Spanish Mackerels, Big Seabass, a healthy Triggerfish and Dad caught a really big Seabass too, on cut bait. Didn't waste time looking for Pogies yesterday either.

My ultra-light jigging reel got "spooled" by a big fish. I think a Bonita. Cause it was so fast and just never stopped. Completely stripped that reel (a very small reel) of all line!

Today, two guys and it was alot sloppier out there in the morning. My "spot" with loads of small ledges, really didn't produce much. A few really small Red Snappers, Seabass of course and that was it.

I again "jigged" vertically with my ultra-light rod and hooked up a JUST SHORT Cobia. Yep, Me again, biggest fish.

31 inch Cobia on the ultra, ultra ultra, extra light Jigging Master rod and a Daiwa Ryoga jigging reel. This was a tough battle!!

Anchoring up and vertical jigging isn't as productive as drifting. But with the stiff wind today, we had to anchor up.

I do have a very very large parachute anchor that slows down the drift of the boat really well. I put it on the boat tonight for future use. And believe if I can get people to actually "work" for their bites. The jigs do produce some action. And no bait needed for some fun, on lighter tackle.

Had about a 10 foot Hammerhead Shark come check us out today. It was awesome. It even went around my marker jug floating on the surface to see if it was something to eat.

Being not far offshore, we weren't gonna get a whole lot of big fish action, this time of year. But a long ride wasn't going to happen this morning or even yesterday with the folks.

Pulled off ever so slightly a fish fry sized bag of fish yesterday. But today missed that by INCHES, with the short Cobia.

5/24 - last few days.......

Had just what I should have all the time. 2 person trips! The last few days. Which was great.  No kids, just adults.

The "NEW" moon and weather this week has been a all out ball buster.

----------------------------
-the new moon is the strongest in the spring and summer,

-the full moon is the strongest in the fall and winter.
---------------------------

I had requests;

On Monday it was all "eating fish", so naturally we tried fishing for Trout.
That was a exercise in futility. And the weather was no help.  I even ran damn near to down town, worked a few old trout spots with NO BITES.  Ended the day at the jetties, and by really the days end anchored in the river over ROCKS and couldn't give away a live shrimp other than to Mangrove Snappers. Which no one could catch but me.

On Tuesday I had a request for "shark fishing". We got lucky in the 20 kt winds, there was a few shrimp boats close. Miles out was close and it was nasty / rough / over cast and "WET" as we busted over the waves chasing the shrimp boats.
With only a few strikes and catching a few small sharks. This game was really not happening. By days end we sat "over rocks"" again with live pogies out the back of the boat in hopes of a big Redfish. That never happened.

For SPRING TIME IN JAX, this certainly hasn't been one for the record books weather wise.

REALLY TRYING TO GET A SLICK CALM DAY TO GO OFFSHORE A FEW MILES AND TRY OUT MY NEW AND EXCITING FISHING TECHNIQUE ON THE LOCAL SPADEFISH POPULATION.

NO ROD AND REEL REQUIRED!

5/18 - river cruisin'

5/13 - damn pogies....some sea flu......lost fish

SATURDAY:  STARTED OUT ON A POGIE HUNT. "they were every where, but hell if I could get them with my brand new net."  Why a new net ya say?

Well, last time out getting pogies, same deal hunted for them, but never got any till I found them in deep deep water. They came up and I threw.....I snatched the net and it was HEAVY! Then the "swivel" broke on the net and the whole shootin match sank to the bottom in 45' of water.  Thanks to Rex, a fella I know who was near me. He got his, and then lent me his net. So I went and finally got some pogies.

CHECK YOUR CAST NET SWIVELS FOR CORROSION!!!

So, today I'm out with a new net and it didn't matter. It was a pain in the butt catching them, for my purposes.

My crew was sea sick, "having the sea flu" the whole time. YES, the Ocean was rolling, but for a bass fisherman from the mid west andy roll was a huge roll.

We ended up in the river. I picked a spot that was going to serve us for a long while. I didn't want to over work myself anchoring and re-anchoring because of my eye (retina surgery last monday). So we fished the spot the whole rising tide.

My crew caught some fish, and lost the big ones. Either coming off or broke lines. YES, we were on heavy structure. But that was maybe just from big fish inexperience, some how.

Ended up with some Jacks, Mangrove snappers of course, Seabass, a stingray that ate a live pogie, and.........

a 20" sweetheart Speckled Trout.

It was a great day weather wise. Not hot, slight breeze, no bright sun, overcast and even a slight sprinkle of rain.

But the fish?

We should have had twice the action that we did. Maybe it was the weather change.  The lost fish I think were BIG Redbass. Which would have been a game changer if they got to the boat.

"JETTYWOLF LIVE" - ""HOW-TO'S AND TECH TIPS""

HAD A COMMENT THAT SPURRED ME TO MAKE THIS VIDEO ABOUT THE GOPRO HERO 5 FRAME ""CASE"". IN A PAST VIDEO:
https://youtu.be/GqJvHNfL5fM

I SHOWED WHAT I THINK IS A WAY BETTER FRAME CASE I PURCHASED ON AMAZON: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01...
$9.99 EACH AND ""WORTH IT""

BUT, DOES IT DEADEN THE NOISE FROM HANDLING THE GOPRO HERO 5, WITH IT'S VERY SENSITIVE MICS?

THIS VIDEO IS YOU BE THE JUDGE.

I THINK IT'S BETTER. BUT I ALSO AT THE END OF THE VIDEO SUGGEST USING THE VOICE COMMANDS AND REMO REMOTE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

YES, I'M SURE THERE'S STILL SQUEAKS AND SQUEALS WHEN MOVING THE GOPRO HERO 5 AROUND IN VARIOUS MOUNTS.

AND THAT RIGHT THERE IS WHAT MANY ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT. (I'VE SEEN ALL THE VIDEO'S)

BESIDES THE O.E.M. FRAME CASE HAVING A LATCH THAT DEMANDS HERCULES FINGERS (I HAVE THEM SO IT DOESN'T MATTER TO ME).

THIS VIDEO MAKES A QUICK COMPARISON USING THE FRAME CASE FROM DEYARD VERSUS ORIGINAL GOPRO.

MY CHOISE IS THE DEYARD CASE....JUST FOR THE FACT THAT IT DOES EZ OPEN, AND HAS A OPENING TO ""OPEN"" THE DOOR FOR THE SD CARD AND USB-C PORT...."""WITHOUT"" TAKING THE HERO 5 OUT OF IT'S FRAME CASE.

PLUS, IT'S GO THAT SOFT RUBBERY TEXTURE, TOO. BETTER TACTILE'NESS (IF THATS EVEN A WORD)

PLEASE SUBSCRIBE FOR JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA FISHING ACTION AND MUCH MORE.

AND GO AHEAD A SHARE THESE TO OTHER GOPRO HERO 5 USERS LOOKING TO TWEAK THEIR GOPRO ECOSPHERE A BIT.

RETINA SURGERY:

DONE AT 11AM ON THE 8TH. OUTCOME GOOD, BUT NOW HAVE GAS BUBBLE IN MY EYE, RIGHT EYE, MY GOOD EYE........LOL!!!

SO EVER THING'S A BLUR!  THE GAS BUBBLE HOLDS DOWN THE LASER STITCHING WHERE THE SMALL TEAR IN MY RETINA WAS.
(I BELIEVE THAT MANY PEOPLE EXPERIENCE THIS AFTER HAVING CATARACT SURGERY, IF THEY ARE ACTIVE AND STRAINING ALOT. OTHER WISE WHY WOULD IT HAVE HAPPENED TO ME AND OTHERS I KNOW)

OF COURSE I'M SUPPOSED TO SIT AND DO NOTHING BUT STARE AT THE WALLS AT HOME. BUT THAT'S NOT HOW I MAKE A LIVING.

1ST CHARTER AFTER SURGERY IS THIS SATURDAY...."I'LL GET BY."

THE GAS BUBBLE IS ""SUPPOSED TO"" GO AWAY ON ITS OWN. I WAS TOLD A WEEK. ""DOESN'T SEEM TO BE"". AND WHEN IT DOES I'LL SEE AGAIN THRU THAT EYE. WITH MANY DOCTORS APPOINTMENTS IN THE FUTURE.   ""UGH, DOUBLE UGH!""

5/6 -the big "CUBE" called Icey-tek

"a JETTYWOLF moment"

Capt Dave is sick of not knowing what to do about all the food and drinks people bring on his charter boat, the 26' center console all welded aluminum, JETTYWOLF.

Especially during the summer months when "picnic'ing" seems to be part of the daily fishing routine. Though we will never be going to "Gilligan's Island", it seems that the more people you take the more groceries you have to carry aboard the boat.

Well, he solved that! With a 200 qt. Icey-tek cooler. The cube style fit his boat the best and the Icey-tek is a no frills get the J-O-B done kind of cooler/fish box, for a boat like the JETTYWOLF.

Fish cooler - Bait cooler - Grocery cooler - Ice storage, and a additional seat. It has many jobs, fits well and "I couldn't be happier!" says Capt Dave.

Another windy weekday in the Spring Time in Jacksonville Fl, fishing aboard Capt Dave's "Jettywolf" charter boat. Light tackle Sport fishing charters.

Scott from California hooks up a "gator" Speckled Trout.

Who was more excited...CAPT DAVE, of course. Big Speckled Sea Trout, are his "thing", it's what makes his world go 'round.

People say, "Trout don't pull". Which says right there, they have never caught a BIG ONE! Rookies say that! Thought this Trout was a large redfish the way it pulled up under the boat and around he anchor line.

Big Trout fishing isn't for everyone. But Scott was a seasoned angler. Especially in Jacksonville. It takes patience and some rod skills.

Speaking of "rods"...the light action of the Ugly Stik , puts head shaking Big Trout to the boat without "pulling the hook!"

Capt Dave uses NOTHING but Ugly Stik rods.

The reel was also a Shakespeare reel..."can ya believe that?"
A Shakespeare, all graphite, star drag levelwind reel called the ATS15. For a whopping $35. It's a great little do -all inshore reel.

4/25 - lots of fishing...

LOT'S OF FISHING GOING ON.  FROM A BOAT LOAD OF 8-10 YEAR OLDS, TO JUST A DAD AND A 5 YEAR OLD.

SPRING/SUMMER IS ALREADY HERE, BECAUSE THE JETTYWOLF IS ALREADY BUSY DOING TRIPS WITH THE KIDS.

SINCE WE NEVER REALLY HAD A WINTER, ALL KINDS OF STUFF IS HAPPENING EARLY SO FAR. AND THAT MEANS GOOD AND BAD.

ANYONE THAT KNOWS ME, KNOWS I LOVE DEEP WINTER, BECAUSE IT'S GO TIME FOR TROUT FISHING. WELL, AS OF RIGHT NOW I'VE PRETTY MUCH "HUNG UP" THE TROUT TACKLE (FLOAT-RIG RODS AND REELS) AND THAT'S WEEK EARLY!

TOO MANY BAIT-STEALERS EATING OUR SHRIMP, WATER TEMPS ARE WELL INTO THE 70'S.  THE REDFISH EPIC SPRING-TIME BITE AT THE JETTIES SEEM DAMN NEAR NON- EXISTENT, THIS YEAR.

SO IN MY OPINION, "NOT HAVING A DEEP COLD WINTER" HAS EFFECTED PLENTY. BUT AT THE SAME TIME, THE OFFSHORE CROWD IS ALREADY KING MACKEREL FISHING.  SO THERE YA GO...

TODAY 4/25 IS THE FIRST DAY I HAVE USED A LIVE WELL OF POGIES. YEAH, I MAYBE A BIT LATE TO THE PARTY. BUT I'M NOT WASTING  FISHING TIME RUNNING AROUND GETTING A DOZEN OF THEM FOR MY SMALL LIVE WELL.

BUT IF THEY ARE SO EZ TO GET, I'LL SURELY GET A NET FULL. AND TODAY THEY WERE SO EZ TO GET IT WAS RIDICULOUS.

USING MY NEW SIDE SCANNING SONAR FEATURE IN MY GARMIN SOUNDER/GPS.
I COULD SEE THEM COMING DOWN THE SIDE OF THE BOAT.

AND I MEAN "DOWN THE SIDE OF THE BOAT!!!!"

SO I THREW THE CAST NET 3 TIMES IN THE STIFF WIND AND HAD ALL I NEEDED.

""I KNEW THE SIDE SCAN FEATURE OF THE GARMIN SOUNDER WOULD BE GREAT FOR FINDING BAIT.""

WE FISHED THE POGIES RIGHT WHERE WE WERE ANCHORED UP, FOR WELL OVER A HOUR WITH NO BITES. (SOUTH JETTY)

SO I PULLED UP SHOP AND SAID GOODBYE TO THE MAYPORT JETTIES FOR THE DAY. (WHICH IN ALL REALITY, HAVE BEEN A REAL BUMMER LATELY FOR ME)

I WENT UP IN THE RIVER AND ANCHORED UP AGAIN IN THE STIFF WIND AND SCOTT AND I BOTH PINNED ON A SMALL LIVE POGIE , AGAIN.

ON SCOTT'S FIRST CAST HERE'S WHAT HE CAUGHT:

A 7 POUND SPECKLED TROUT!

WE CONTINUED FISHING AND I HOOKED UP ON TWO AND LOST THEM. (I WAS USING A TINY LITTLE HOOK, THAT I NEVER CHANGED OUT FROM FISHING LIVE SHRIMP)  BUT EITHER WAY, I FINALLY HOOKED UP A 19-1/2 INCH TROUT.

SCOTT CAUGHT A NICE CHUNKY SEA BASS, HAD A FEW OTHER "PICK-UPS"...BUT THAT WAS IT ON THIS SPOT.

SO WE MOVED ON WITHOUT MUCH ELSE GOING ON, BEFORE SCOTT HAD TO CATCH A PLANE BACK TO CALIFORNIA.

NOT A TON OF ACTION.

BUT. A VIDEO IS COMING SOON OF TODAY'S CHILLY MORNING,AND STIFF WINDS.

SO STAY TUNED.

Wednesday, April 19, 2017

4/18 - its 100% official

ITS SPRING TIME...100% TODAY!!

THE MAYPORT JETTIES JUST ''POPPED''

- SPANISH MACKEREL HAVE ARRIVED.

- GLASS MINNOW, THREADFIN HERRING, MULLET, POGIES ARE THERE.

DID A 2 HR. KIDS TRIP TODAY WITH 2 SISTERS, AND ONE OF THEM'S 2 - DAUGHTERS. KEPT IT REAL SIMPLE AS THEY'VE NEVER BOTTOM FISHED IN THE OCEAN BEFORE. ANCHORED OUT IN THE BLUE CLAY BOTTOM OFF THE SOUTH JETTY AND QUICKLY STARTED TO LOAD THE COOLER WITH WHITING. NOT HUGE WHITING, BUT KEEPER FISH.....THEN ONE OF THE KIDS GOT SEAS SICK, SO MOM SAID, ''LETS HEAD IN.''

IF WE HAD MORE TIME, I'M SURE WE COULD HAVE GOT A BLACK DRUM OUT THERE ON THAT SPOT, BECAUSE THAT'S WHERE I'VE CAUGHT MANY BEFORE.

OR WE COULD HAVE TROLLED UP SOME SPANISH MACKEREL. I HAVE THE HARDWARE ON THE BOAT.

-WANT A SERIOUS TECH TIP:  ''WHEN TROLLING UP SPANISH MACKEREL ON PLANERS AND SPOONS. #1 YOU CAN'T USE THOSE ''FAIRY WAND'' BUGGY WHIP SPINNING RODS. THEY WON'T WORK!!!! A MED HEAVY ACTION TRIGGER CASTING UGLY STIK WILL WORK, OR A KINGFISH ACTION STYLE ROD. AND WHEN TROLLING THE PLANER AND SPOON, MAKE SURE YOU TURN A LOT. ''WE CALL IT THE TURN AND BURN''.....AND GO PRETTY FAST, THE PLANERS WILL DIVE AT DIFFERENT DEPTHS AS YOU PILL THEM AND MAKE TURNS. A SMALL PLANERS IS ALL THATS NEEDED. AND HERE ON EBAY IS WHERE YOU CAN GET MEGA BULK SPOONS CHEAPER:

BUY BULK SHARE WITH A BUDDY.  YEARS WORTH OF INSTANT ACTION!!!!!

USED TO BE ALL THE CHARTER CAPTAINS/GUIDES WOULD BE ''TURNING AND BURNING'' ON THE SPANISH MACKEREL SCHOOLS BACK IN THE DAY. NOW WITH ALL THE ''COOL GUYS'' THAT ARE TOO GOOD FOR THIS FUN FISHING, WHERE THEY ARE SO NEW, THEY DON'T EVEN TRY SUCH A SPORT. THE FANCY BAY BOATS AND TROLLING MOTORS HAVE THEM , ''TOO GOOD'', FOR THIS KIND OF FUN.

SO, IF YOU TROLL UP THE SPANISH MACS...''YOU'LL BE PRETTY MUCH ALONE'', BECAUSE NOT EVEN THE PUBLIC WEEKENDERS DO IT MUCH ANY LONGER.
