3/5- JOSFC (Jacksonville offshore sport fishing club RIVER tournament)

I'll be doing a "talk" at my fishing club on Thursday night. The J.O.S.F.C at the Mayport Boat Ramp.

The River Tournament (for club members) is on Saturday 3/8. (Might have fished it. But I have a charter with a family, their boys 13th Birthday)

JOSFC RIVER TOURNAMENT: AGGREGATE of 3 eligible species, wins. Not sure if it was that way back in the day when I won it a few times. But, 3 heaviest fish shows you're a "rounded" angler. And my opinion is all tournaments should be that way.

average Jetty Black Drum

10 pound "in all her glory" clam caught sheeps

another 10#'er on Clam

"River Tournement stategies" in a nut shell.

-Go ASAP (or you should have already done this by Thursday) to Trout River Seafood  as a good example. And order yourself a bag of chowda' Clams. If you can. BIGGER THE BETTER!

-Get some "people eating sized Shrimp". I like these for quality sake. Jumbo shrimp heads on. Each Shrimp provides at least two quality sized and firm baits.

-BLUE CRABS....the water's still cold enough now and the bait stealers aren't all that bad. But, I hate spending the BIG $$ on crabs to have all the Pinfish and 3" Seabass eating them up in 5 seconds. So, yeah Crabs are part of the bait arsenal too. Spend it if ya got it!

-Load the boat with 4-12 ounce lead bank sinkers, if you usually don't have them.

- Using Clams is my deal 100%. Have never not caught big Sheepshead on Clam strips. They suck it up with just a tap on the rod tip. No stealthy bites, but inhale it like a crack head on a bender. They can't stand it. Then, I use "elastic bait thread" to wrap my clam on to the hook with. Then, I pin on a big chunk of peeled shrimp.

Just ordered a bunch of bait thread on Ebay. I ran out, so I need it for the spring Drum and spawning Sheeps that is already in motion.

HERE IS THE LINK TO EBAY DEAL

- To circle or not circle......for me circle hooks get used when I am "rod holder" fishing. If people/persons are holding a rod (in lighter current) I won't use a circle hook. The ole saying is though;
"a circle hook is the best fisherman ever. A Circle hook with a rod in the holder, makes no mistakes."

- Where to fish?  Personally, I have caught plenty of big Sheepshead anchored away, of the jetty rocks. YES, no where near a rock, "but adjacent too". Key words. Along the channel edges at the jetties. Looking for when the tides slows, is a key. Same goes for big Black Drum, and of course, same goes for larger Redfish. (usually NOT under 27") That's the Redfish problem!!

Same deal up in the river. Another ole saying; "H-A-R-D equals F-I-S-H". There's plenty of that hard bottom in the river. And that's where large Sheepshead & Drum can be found.

"DOUBLE-ECHO" on color sounder = hard bottom!

I know loads of people will fish the tips (submerged part) of the North and south Jetties for Drum and Sheeps. But can ya imagine after the El Cheapo Sheepshead tournament how many NEW anchors were left out there???  I've talked to 3 people who lost their anchor that day. So, I don't anchor off the North tip anymore. It's jus' me. Because every time I do, I get caught in someone elses mistake. And my anchor is special to me. I have to order them. I can't just get one at the bait shop.

It holds my 26' boat in almost all conditions, and I do not want to hang it in some other dudes 100' of balled up anchor line on the bottom snagged up in all the rocks and other debris. SO I FISH, ELSE WHERE.  (again, it's jus me)

I think the rest of the "Strategies" are basic fishing, such as hooks, leaders, rigs etc.

Just plan those fishing hours, per the tides. And....KEEP THOSE BAITS IN THE WATER!

3/4 - Four days in a row.....

Four days in a row, four days of wacky weather.

Thanks to all who toughed it out, caught some fish, and had some laughs aboard the JETTYWOLF.

Much appreciated as always. (and there's always more to come. You can count on that!)

Sunday, March 2, 2014

3/2- Reports/Video/photos to come.

One more day of, 4 in a row. And I'll post Reports-Video-Photos.
Right now I'm so tired, the laptop screen is blurry.

If ya know what I mean....(one mo' time)

Let me say one thing.

F-O-G is my favorite fishing conditions, always!

I believe it has something to do with the "perfect" barometric pressure of something.

In the last three days now. I have seen conditions go from Heinous to Foggy and good.

Just one more day...

2/26 - YESTERDAY....

Yep, yesterday was it. The day of all days.
What was it, something like 83 degrees?
Zero wind, and a lot of sun......and I bet out on Bazzaro River, the FISH probably didn't get the memo.

I keep hearing on NOAA weather radio each morning this week that the water temp sure has jumped up.
Hope Miss Gator Trout, is happy and warm.

I'll be at it:

Friday - 2 folks from TX
Saturday - One fella from Washington State (the Jettywolf's birth place) and one J-ville fella.
Sunday - ???? A guy from N.J. and some other people?? He's failed to give me any details.

So, I'll have a damn good idea if the water's warmer out there.

Just remember this if you wish you were going fishing like me,

OR

If you're having a bad day, just remember in 1976 Ronald Wayne sold his 10% stake in Apple for $2,300. It is now worth $59,565,410,309.

2/24 -LOVE IT

Yep...this is the time when the Jettywolf shows he's a predator!

When "they" start clearing out the old, and bringing in the "new".

I'll be there. Scooping up the deals, like free chickens around the hen house.

C'C'mon!!!

NEW CORADO'S COMING OUT:

2/22 - NOT Sheepshead....

Continuing to make a living...

I be your "waterman" as they say up yonder in the Chesapeake Bay.

2/21 - Make wind-on leaders:

Ya' know sometimes the simplest instruction is the best instructions.

If you are into this and have some knowledge already. This video shows a the steps needed to make a wind-on leader. Which is used to attach Braid to braid, or Mono to braid.

Thought I'd pass it along. I'm going to do some experimenting myself with this. So a "Dave trying it out video" could be forth coming.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

-was heading out with a regular/loyal customer today. Had plans on trying some TROUT redemption.
But as the morning progressed. (5am-7:30am) I noticed something I didn't like.

THE WIND!

7:30 am EST
1230 GMT 02/21/2014
Wind: SSW (200°), 11.1 kt
Gust: 17.1 kt

Did you know, if you are a MAYPORT fisherman. That you too can get up-to-date hourly "conditions" reports right here at Capt Dave's Reports Blog????

Yep. I supply YOU with the weather right at the "Mayport Boat ramp/heading to the jetties!"

As I always say, "sometimes people can't see the forest from the tree's".
On the RIGHT side-bar of this blog is a widget that shows the "present conditions" from station MYPF1. Adjacent to the Mayport boat ramp, atop the dock at the Mayport Bar Pilot Assoc. dock.

2/18 - The search continues...

The G-A-T-O-R Trout that were at the Mayport jetties 10 days ago.....
have vanished. Why?

That's the 64 thousand dollar question.

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

2/11 - Weekdays, again!

If you're NOT a local yokal. And are freezing yer _ _ _ off up in the northland. The last two days here, or basically the last three days have been GLORIOUS!

Yes, we only get a few days a month that are super nice. And Y-O-U are missing them.

I've been getting calls from Illinois, Iowa, etc. the last few days, where the people tell me they're done with it and need a break.

Well, folks. I know YOU aren't reading these reports. I tell you too. But I know you don't....

But here I am, as usual telling you about WARMTH, NO WIND, SUNNY SHINE, BLUE SKIES.

AND THE FISH ARE CHEWIN' !!!!

2/10 - Getting close to sharkin' 4 pak!

Ya know I'm excited about sharkin this summer. Yeah, behind the shrimp boats for the kids and stuff.

But I'm excited about "really" Sharkin'.

I'm gearing up and getting a somewhat matched  "four set" of BIG reels and Heavy rods.
Saw this and thought....."I'd like to meet that man." Talk about a guy who is Sharkin Psycho!

GUESS HE GAVE UP? IT WAS FOR SALE:

THIS IS THE REELS HE PIECED TOGETHER:

I'm not that nutty.

Because I'll be in the Jettywolf of course. With Y-O-U possibly in a West Coast style harness, like this:

A Daiwa Sealine 9/0, 900H, and a 50-80# stand-up rod pointed at where the shark is heading. As we "give chase!"

On hopefully something like this:

Well, maybe not that big......we'll reserve that one for me.
And the GoPro's will be running and capturing the whole thing!

<NO PROOF-NO GLORY>

2/9 - This week at the jetties:

Let me start by saying......"NOT ALL TIDES ARE CREATED EQUAL". If you don't know that yet.
You need to learn why. Or you'll be kicking yourself in the ass for a long, long time.

It gets back to one of my favorite saying from Seinfeld. (ya know the TV show...for you youngsters out there)

When George Costanza was breaking up with a girl he was dating. Because she had some kind of goofy thing she did he didn't like, he'd say to her while sitting at the Coffee shop; "It's not you....IT'S ME!" so the girl wouldn't think he's breaking up with her, because of something she does or did. But rather, he was at fault. (and yes, it was him. Cause he was an idiot)

The reason I mention that, is because no matter what you do sometimes. IT'S NOT YOU...IT'S THE T-I-D-E.

In my business. I get thrown a day. One out of 365. My customers have no idea about tides. They have no idea about Moon-phases.

BUT I DO.

So let's talk Sunday Feb 9th.
The tide was a 4.3 tide range from High to low. With a "positive" low tide at 0.4.
Which means we barely had a 4.0 foot tidal range. Add in a bluebird day. And it was pretty sweet out there. But, in the Ocean. There wasn't much tide flow.

Now when you get a tide range from High to low, or low to high that pushing towards 5 feet of water movement....."That's when you'll say to yourself. Damn this water's hauling ass!"

On Sunday we were just under 4 feet of water movement. So the moral of this story was. Josh and I would float-rig outside the jetties, and no matter what the tide phase was. There was NO current.

So, any lack of bites. Wasn't because we weren't fishing hard enough, or in the right place. It's because of Mother Nature. Getting back to the ole Costanza saying...."It's not you it's me." if the tide could talk!

So, there's only ONE way of making this right. PUT IN YOUR TIME! And make the day into a Marathon Fishing Adventure.

And because it was just Josh and I. His girlfriend decided to sleep in. I didn't care how long it took to get limits of Trout or close to it.

Plus, we had a 6 pound Sheepshead on the ole Float-rig, and one pupper Redbass. And a limit of Trout. But........I pulled the boat out of the water at the boat ramp in the DARK. After cleaning all the fish.
So it was a 8:30am to 7pm day. I ate dinner after having zero food all day, at 9pm!

6 pound, 7-striped Jetty Snapper.....via Cappy Dave's float-rig and live shrimp.
But I didn't care.....WE WON!

--------------------------------
Earlier in the week on Wednesday. (AFTER LAST SUNDAY & MONDAY'S TROUT WAYLAY) I had a father & son duo who choose not to go on Monday or even Tuesday, but rather, Wednesday. We went and sat in 4 footers at the jetties in the wind, caught one 12" yellowmouth trout.
And one Bluefish in the river afterwards.....then it started to pour on us.
And back at the boat ramp, it was an all out soaking with big time rain.
(in the winter months, do all you can to go on the days I at least tell ya, will be the best.)

2/3 - The Attack....of the "discard disposals"

Been wanting for awhile to hone in on all my dock Pelicans who know that when the Metal Boat arrives, there's usually fish to be cleaned.

Yes, having a custom starboard fish cleaning / bait board on the back of my boat has it's positives.....No having to tote fish home and clean them, and then get rid of the disards. Just do my fish filleting at the dock and all is taken care of.

ENJOY.

"It's Mozart"....C'mon!

2/3 - I told ya Monday's can be..... H-O-T!!!!!

WINTER, it's all about taking advantage of good weather, IE: Lack of wind, nice temps, good barometer, calm waters.

If you don't. Then you could be missing out. And today, YOU DID!

Here's day #2 of what I call, "Whack'n & Stack'n" aboard the Jettywolf.

Hope you Enjoy, because these video's take anywhere from 3 hrs to 8 hrs to load, preview,  edit, find music for, and upload, to Youtube. Just so when you come to MY BLOG, it's the best most informative, updated local fishing reports of any Jacksonville fishing guide.

1/29-1/30 - "Jax Idiot fest"

OH MY GAWD!!!!!!!

they're closing schools, delaying school openings, the local yokal News has nothing better to talk about.

the world is ending!

It's gonna be cold, and wet. It's an all out ICE ALERT.

Please...spare me. If I only could afford cable TV, I wouldn't have to watch these idiots.

Last cold spell, about 10-14 days ago, there was I-C-E covering the slow moving canals in Slidell, Louisiana. (aka: Paradise)  And the boys from Dockside Bait & Tackle put the boat in smashing the ice at the boat ramp, went and caught "LIMITS" (5 from 16-27") REDFISH, in a matter of just minutes in a dead end deep canal. (If only we could do that)

But, for you with cable TV and a real J-O-B.
I ain't feeling for ya.....hahahahahahaha

A Reel alert:

Next week: High in 70's and super T-R-O-U-T tides!
