6/16 - SUPER BAIT & FUN

Every summer while usually doing my 2 hour kids trips, we'll be anchored up at the jetties and will be fishin pieces of dead shrimp on the bottom. The little kids along with Mom and Dad are having fun, and we'll be catching:

-Croakers
-Whiting
-Sand Trout
-Jacks

and as of today, numerous BLUE RUNNERS!!!!

Why doesn't anyone anchor up, bait up a with pieces of dead shrimp, and catch SUPER KINGFISH BAITS RIGHT THERE AT THE JETTIES?

As I released a half dozen 12-14" lively Blue runners, all I could think about is fishing them, from outside the Jax beach pier to the S.E. Hole area. And the possibilities of having them revenged by a smoker sized Kingfish.

I do this all the time....but we stop in and catch live shark baits, for behind the shrimp boats. Live little Jacks, Croakers, Whiting, and even the Blue runners are killer baits for the Shrimp boat sharks, so why not for Kingfish??????

When I do a longer trip, with the adults. I'm going to do this. But, instead of shark baits. These small
baits will get drifted off the beach, looking for that big KINGFISH.

6/13 - It's HOT....

From in the river to no matter where...without a breeze it's been really hot out there.
Water temps on the surface today were 84 degree's.
If there's a bite at all at the Mayport Jetties, ya better hope you booked a date with a rising tide!

At least the flooding ocean water kicks off a bit of a bite.
-Croakers
-Whiting
-Redfish
-etc.
So as I "ALWAYS SAY"......Your day is based on the tide.

Heading to a close reef. Oh, that's fun. Especially with  the 3-4 foot seas every morning. Or at least every time I try!!!

The whole reason I gave up doing offshore trips is the Atlantic Ocean Seas, in the 1st place!  Got tired of getting beat up all the time.

I've yet to see any "pond like" conditions outside the Jetties on days that I tried getting just a bit offshore.

(FREE shark bait. Anyone want to try for a 500 pounder?)

Here's a Bonita, or rather a "little Tunny" as they are really called, caught while moving from spot to spot the other day while dragging a Buck-tailed Jig behind the boat.

With live Pogies being a 10 plus mile long trek to get. I "opted out", so we hit a close in ledge (8 miles out) and we bottom fished, and hooked up Sharks and Cuda's on the reef.

To properly do offshore trips, I'd have to revamp my my whole thinking and boat set up.

So I just "dabble".

I used to troll dead cigar minnows and was very successful using them (back in the day).  From 45 pound kings too Sailfish, we caught the ole school way. "Making a dead cigar minnow look a live!"  But today, it seems like its a lost art, kinda thing.

BUT....like a few pounds of fresh dead shrimp on the boat, ALWAYS. When fishing inshore. When I'm thinking of heading to any reef for a bit of trolling. I'm not leaving the dock without a box of Cigar minnows!

People would rather run 15 miles, in hopes to catch a pogie. And spend till 10:30AM getting bait versus just going fishing, and fishing '"bait from a box".

First off, when it's rough out there, the last thing I wanna do is to troll so slow, that I'm going backwards in the seas. Cigar minnow trolling, means that you can go faster, and cover more ground at the same time.

6/6 - Its that time of year.

TROPICAL WAVE...?  COLIN

https://weather.com/storms/hurricane/news/tropical-storm-colin-june-2016

Well Monday was kinda "doomed". Bad winds, bad wind direction, bad tide, bad moon.
So, from here on out folks, have a back up day.
It's storm time.

I awoke to pouring rain and that's a "here's yer sign"....
They got that right in the forecast, so the rest would probably be right too.

I hate going when the chances of actual catching is slim to none.

6/3 - what's happening....

B-I-G S-H-A-R-K-S!
behind the shrimp boats...as long as you get on them early.

Then, before the S.E. "sea breeze" starts honkin'.

Get up on a spot in the river and hook -up BULL REDS.

But ya better take bait with ya. Because Pogies aren't a given if you show up late.

So since I've done a few late morning trips, because I had 2 hour KIDS TRIPS in the morning. And couldn't get a Pogie to save my skin. I take bags of Boston Macs. And the Redfish seem to like it.
Oily and Nasty, like a Pogie. It works.

Lost this 30 pound Red, because it ran under the boat and cut the 20# braided line like a knife!!!

THIS DUDE was a beast....had to be 7' long!!
(way behind a shrimp boat)  We had a "double" on but lost one of them, Thank Goodness!

5/30 - what a crappy Friday and Saturday (Holiday weekend)

Good Gawd, when it's off around here it's off!
There were times when we couldn't give away a shrimp on the bottom of the river or Jetties, Friday and Saturday.
The full moon?
The Tropical wave?
My neighbor went all the way to the Keys for a few small Mangrove snappers and a few small Dolphin, in a boat he rented down yonder. Damn what I could have done with all that money.

........Lake Pontchartrain limits of 14" Speckled Trout here, I come!!  Is what I would have done with that cash.

But, the Moon is over and the Tropical wave is in S. Carolina now, so hopefully we can get back to business as usual around here.

BIG MULLOWAY to them, TROUT to us

THAT IS NOTHING MORE THAN A "Dinosaur" TROUT......(what we'd call a Trout) In Aussie land it's a Mulloway.

Can ya ever imagine catching that at the Mayport Jetties on a Float rig?

5/26 - 2 hour KIDS TRIP

It's getting to be that time of year again.  Soon, I won't do a trip without at least one kid on the boat.
But, they need to be at least 10-12.  A younger means a 2 hour kids trip.  Youngsters under 10, go for two, maybe 3 hours max. And the adult(s) aboard need to help their kids.

With that said, I had grandpa and grandma aboard today with 8 year old Daniel.

I was hoping for Croakers, but it was solid Seabass. As we did some simple bottom fishing with Shrimp.

Daniel had the bug and didn't want to quit. But two hours could have been 12 hrs for him. The problem young kids have is, "impatience". And never leaving the rod and reel alone, too fish. We'd always catch more if they'd just leave the tackle alone.

My two hour kids trips, are just a 'taste' of fishing. Not meant to be a trophy fish catching world tour.
Usually done early, because since I only do these trips in the summer time. The problem becomes HEAT, if we leave to late.

2- hours, $200 pre-reserved with a deposit. Max 4 persons.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Before my crew arrived this morning. I worked a slab spoon off the boat ramp dock. Not much action is ever had. Despite all the fish carcasses I dump in to the water there. And unlike most boat ramps/fish cleaning areas. I only get an occasional fish off the docks.

Today was a weird one. My first ever 'Tail-less Whiting".  I've caught tail-less Redfish, Tail-less Trout, Redfish that had a broken back, Blind Redfish. But never a "short" Whiting. And it still ate a one ounce Slab spoon jigged off the bottom.

Fish Cleaning: It's what I do.

People ask me all the time, what fillet knife do I like.

My answer is very simple, "A super sharp one"

But when it boils down to it. The Rapala knives are always a favorite and a good value.

I have several knives. But the most important thing is the "sharpening aspect".

I use the WORKSHARP sharpener. Fast, EZ and once the knife has a good hone on it, only takes 5 minutes to put a hair splitting ( fish skin) slicing edge back on a used fillet knife.

BEST VIDEO SERIES:

Speaking of Rapala knives...

I like having a lot of sharp knives aboard the Jettywolf. So if I got lazy and haven't sharpened a few in a while, I'll have plenty to choose from.

Got a deal on these at $29.00 for all (6) on Ebay

5/15 - Unbelievable

If someone told me that at 8am, along the north beach of Hanna park. Out in the Ocean at 18-20 feet of water, on a Sunday. That there could be up wards of at least 50 plus boats all cast-netting for Pogies. Most looking to have "LIKE ME" a true Pogie net. (Mine is a 8 foot 5/8th, I believe) and out of those 50 boats, maybe 5-6 actually caught Pogies. The rest of us, me included. Couldn't catch a single one. Even though the Pogies were literally flipping on the surface!

I know I tied all the tactics. Throwing on ones flipping, in the shallowest water, while drifting into them with the wind, motor off, and never caught even one.  The astounding thing was, I was not alone.

Everyone was amazed at how fast they were. So, they must have been on the small side, being so speedy to run from out under the nets being thrown at them.

I of course was severely handicapped, from the start. The day before I hurt my back, in between my shoulder blades so bad it was effecting my ribs. I couldn't even take a deep breath. My mobility all day was very limited. I re-injured a month ago muscle problem, because I spent the whole day under my boat trailer, under my truck even on the driveway concrete tracing down a problem with my trailer lights.  So I was no where near 100%.....and it got worse as I pulled anchor, and moved around the boat, plus fished with my single crew member Ernest, from VA.  Which was one hell of a patient, and wonderful guy to have aboard the Jettywolf!

To make a long story short. I ALWAYS CARRY A BIG CONTAINER OF DEAD SHRIMP!
So we used the shrimp to drift the beach and catch Whiting. We took the Whiting back to the Jetties and anchored up and used "cut chuncks" for bait for Redbass and whatever else.

Right away it was Seabass bites galore on the cut bait. Then nothing. I learned from previous charters this past week, when using cut bait, it's not always what "everyone" down below wants. We switched over to the dead shrimp and that's all she wrote.

D-E-A-D shrimp.....preferred over fresh cut Whiting baits!!

We hooked up 2 more Redbass, that came off. One was such a stud, it ripped "me" straight into the structure below that we were fishing and broke me off. The other came off the hook.

We also had BIG Whiting, Croakers, and Yellowmouth Trout. Filling up the fish box!

Went from complete ZERO's to HERO's, in just a few hours.

Back right at the beginning of the morning before the "Pogie fiasco". We fished Slab spoons on the north Jetty, before the seas and winds got too bad. And I caught a Pompano on a Slab Spoon and a piece of Fishbites (HINT: to Pier fisherman, Pompano love these, and Fishbites)

It was short of being a keeper. But that's now numerous Pompano taken on my Slab Spoon tipped with Fishbites, so far this spring.

By the end of the day. I was in such hurt that I could barely move, or take a breath. I don't even know how I got home. It was all a blurr.

Thanks to Mom being a "Home Pharmacist" I'm now feeling better after a good sleep and Hyrocodene Pain killer pills she brought over my house with a good hot meal. (Thanks Mom!)

5/10 - GREAT CREW, GREAT WEATHER, GREAT DAY!

Started out simply bottom fishing that last of the falling tide. Live fresh shrimp on the bottom and got away with jus' 4 oz. sinkers....WOW!

Whiting at first than Kaye hooked a beast!

after the tide started to change, we tried to get some of those bigger Yellowmouth Trout and Virginia Croakers I've caught on the southside of the south jetty.  NO ONE DARED to go over there in their little bay boats. This was JETTYWOLF COUNTRY ONLY!

It was a washing machine. But we gave it a try and didn't get what we came for. so we worked our way into the ICW, and tried float-rig fishing for Trout.  Again, people who I have taken on charters were literally racing me there, and jumped right into the "spot".  Well, those people can have it....I'm hanging up the float-rigs for the remainer of the year. It was to warm, too dull, and too much current (as always) and nothing but shit fish bites.

Back to the jetties for REAL EXCITMENT!

-Yellowmouth Trout- Jacks- Redbass......fast action

-a actual keeper sized Redbass, WOW!

-a 31 incher. As usual.
