2/26 - it's not how ya start but how ya finish

whoa, a real slow start today with the rising high tide this morning. Basically "toured" ourselves around till the tide started to to turn, with no action in some of the usual places I'd go to throw lures all day long.

Those lures being mostly the Egret Baits - Vudu Mullet in 4.5" and 3.5" sinking models

Can I just say, "This bait is one of the hottest baits to hit the deck of the Jettywolf since the DOA shrimp....but even better sometimes."

You say..."But why Dave?"
My answer is simple......because it works, and works easy. Any one with some simple fishing sense at all can work this lure the way I like to work it. And believe it or not, it's not by "incessantly" casting it!  But, simply doing the "twitch". While anchored in current on a good spot with hard structure or bottom, all ya gotta do is cast it out, let it sink (Be it the heavier 4.5" or the 3.5" bait) hit the bottom and twitch the rod tip and turn the handle of the reel once!  The bait does all the work!!!!

Yes, it's so simple. The Egret Vudu Mullet can make a lure chucker out of about anyone with any fishing sense.

"Dave, you sound as if it's too good to be true", (you might say). Well let me tell you, thats how I like to fish many a lure. constant casting can get tiresome and boring.

I'm "usually" in charge of anchoring my boat. And I know where we should be anchored. If not the first time, at least by the 2nd try. So positioning is half the battle. Get it right and you're GOLDEN!

As we did today. I had for the "many'ith time" Dennis the tournament Bass fisherman aboard the Jettywolf. Just the words "fishing lures" perks up Dennis' ears. Although he is now a saltwater fisherman, he is so open to new ideas and learning new things. He's mastered using the float-rig. He did that by the end of our first charter a year or two ago. And with huge trout under his belt, that day. We've done alot of fishing styles. Popping corks in Mill Cove. Got that. Jigging the slab spoons. He got that! There's not a lot of angling learning curve for Dennis. He knows the program.

But even he will admit and did may times today, "Damn, all I was doing was twitching this lure behind the boat and whammo!" And this comes from a guy who loves to cast his lures, cast them fast and cast them long distances.
Largest Trout today actually came off a 1/4 oz. DOA Shrimp, cast into all that wind!

So, I'm so happy to have all my winter and spring baits and techniques covered and "filled in".
*There's Float-rig fishing live shrimp
*Then in the deep, there's slab spoon/vertical jig w/ a patch of FISHBITES attached to seal the deal.
*And now when a live shrimp just isn't working (or getting eaten by thieves) and there's nice fat Trout in the area that we're targeting. The Vudu Mullet steps up to still catch'em, no matter who you are.

Back to today's windy and cold fishing report; We ended up fishing a area I haven't frequented in a long while. As we were there ole memories started to surface and so did the stories of "days gone by"
when of course the local fishing seemed a whole lot better. Back then it was MirrOlure 52MR twitch baits, maybe a DOA shrimp, and what seemed like a bounty of Trout that could always be counted on.

So what Dennis and I did was, fish a ole school spot, and caught a real nice cooler full of Speckled Trout on the falling tide. Dennis dabbled in both the Vudu Mullet and the DOA shrimp, back and forth, while I stayed dead nuts on the Vudu Mullet, all day long. Both Lures caught them, with the Vudu Mullet holding the slight edge, and ease of fishing in the 15-20 knot cold NW winds.

If you remember I posted this awhile ago.

It needs to be done.

A state Law-maker is tired of being brow beat on the waters, himself.

I'm sending this man a note RICH WORKMAN (R) if this goes thru, a personal thank you note.

Why is water different than in your car on a street. NO, they can't pull you over and ream you just for the fun of it. But they always have.....on the water!!

2/2 - From FOG to FOG and in between

Started the morning off with Talon and his dad Jeff, out for Talon's first ever fish, and fishing trip.
One of my 2 hour Kids Trips.

Went and pitched some jigs and caught only my second ever SeaRobin ever, in Florida. "it flew to the boat"

As the tide turned and started to flood on in the river. Went to a high tide spot and they were home! And proceeded to catch my limit and 5 other's (TROUT) on DOA Shrimp (1/4 oz.) and Egret Baits VUDU Mullet.  It was a blast and they were slamming the DOA like the ole days. After the limit was in the cooler, I played with the VuDu Mullet for awhile and they loved it too.

Really, two of my my favorite soft plastics. I love the fact that the DOA shrimp is so easy and ya work it so slow. It was text book. Cast "cross current" and let it sweep right to them, in the current.

NEXT UP: WEDNESDAY with one person before the bad weather comes this weekend.

1/16 - Patterns have obviously changed, Weakfish too.

Had John & his son Chase aboard today, from Georgia. We hit it really early and the tide ran forever, with a low tide at 7am at the jetties we had current till damn near 10am!

There's three kinds of Trout fishing days around here.
1. Not a lot of fish, but the ones caught were all big Gators.
2. Numerous Trout, but not any with Gator status.
3. Worked your ass off, "Is there actually Trout around here?" because you never caught any.

Today was a number 2.

What I mean by the title of this report is that it's now two winters at least and the Jetty Trout seem to be scarce. Compared to years past.  Being a winter of not really any cold weather, it maybe that there's been a shift. I am getting more in the river, but less at the jetties.

The Standard rule if there is one for me has always been;

Trout further from the inlets in the summer, and closer to inlets in the winter. Don't really feel that I'd get an argument with that statement. So, when you don't really have a winter?  Well, that's my theory.

The big Bull Redbass seem to really thin out years ago by the 2nd week in November, leaving a few here and there in the river. Well,  I believe last month people were still catching them like it was the end of October.

The "Yellowmpouth Trout", aka: real name "Weakfish". Back when Speckled Trout were closed in Feb. That's all we could put in the cooler during Feb.  And we'd catch 2 to 4 pounders no problem at the jetties. Float-rig, Jig-n-shrimp, bottom fishing. It didn't matter.

Now and the last few years, these fish all but have about vanished.....And not a soul even mentions it.
They were a steady, main stay at the jetties not only in Feb. But all winter right thru Spring.

5 Pounders and up! My largest was a 7.5 pounder that ate a MirrOlure 5200MR in shocking Fluorescent Yellow with a Fluorescent red head.  I thought the fish was a 30 inch Redfish the way it fought.

Boy, do I miss those days. The Good ole days?

TODAY 1/16 we worked hard for any Jetty Trout, real hard. All the while I never saw a single boat around us....."All sheepshead fishing" as usual, even catch a fish!  We had a 22" Red, and a Sheepshead as bonus fish today along with our hard earned jetty Specks. And NOT a single Weakfish.

Over all today's catch was still very good.

15 Speckled Trout to 19".  2 - 3 pound Sheepshead, a 14" Flounder, a Croaker worth keeping, a 22" Redfish...and I'm pleased to say not a single Pinfish or 4" Mangrove Snapper.

I could almost used a larger fish box!

MID-DAY NET FULL...had to pull trout and give a count.

I can tell ya it took me over a hour to clean all we had.  Didn't go nuts with photos or video today. Just didn't have it in me.

But, as it looked like rain at 1:30pm we packed it in and headed back. All I had my crew do today was Float-rig fish. It's all we needed to do!

But still, things still aren't the way they used to be, which has me pining for the "ole days".

The City of Jacksonville with the support of the Florida Inland Navigation District is creating a Maritime Management Plan. A Team from the Northeast Florida Regional Council, University of North Florida and Jacksonville University will be gathering information about water access facilities and the needs and desires of the community, so that we have a plan to guide us as we maintain facilities, plan for unmet needs and ensure that the important role that water access plays in our economy and our quality of life remains strong for the long term.
We need your help to get the word out to your friends and neighbors so they can tell us what they think about our waterways. Take the survey! It is at JAXBOATPLAN.COM. That website is also the place to look for information related to the plan and upcoming public meetings.

1/12 - What a beautiful day!!!!!!

and of course, I WASN'T OUT THERE!!!!!!

I tell people ll the time.

"I specialize in fishing under the harshest conditions. IE: Full & New Moons, with gale force due East of West winds. Bitter cold record chill days, 6 foot seas on a July afternoon in 99 degree heat with lightning and blinding rain.....because I don't get to pick my days.

Instead of fishing on this glorious day.

I went and got a new anchor to replace yesterdays lost one.
Spent the $201.50 buying my customers their "fishing licenses".
I have to buy the fishing license for the boat in this state.
While every other state customers have to buy their own fishing license.

THEN,  I CLEANED UP A BUNCH OF FISH FROM SUNDAY, STOKED UP THE FRYER, POPPED OPEN A FEW "xtra strong" NEW CASTLE BEERS.

SEASONED THE FILLETS AFTER THE OIL BATH WITH SOME CREOLE SEASONING, AND HAD ME A PIG FEST, EATING FRESH FRIED TROUT, FLOUNDER & SHEEPSHEAD,.......

THEN PASSED OUT IN MY LAZY BOY FOR TWO HOURS BECAUSE THE 4 BEERS I CHUGGED WERE SO DAMN STRONG, THEY KNOCKED ME OUT!

c'c'mon, let's git you some!
