9/8 - B-A-I-T
Talked to a man for an hour and a half yesterday in Academy Sports on Atl. Blvd, all about "Float-rig" fishing.......
His name was DAVE!
He and I are on the exact same page when it came to float-rigging, BIG TROUT.
Amazing to meet someone, by just saying Hello, who is on my same wave length.
Accept he gets to fish, where and when, and do what he wants. Unlike me.
He told me stuff, I told him stuff. Great exchanges of ideas!!
And we both AGREED.
Here's the best MONSTER TROUT BAIT in the summer.
OH YEAH!

9/6 - What the holy hell??????
I was re-watching a ole video I made about tying a "stopper knot" for your float-rig / slip float.
And ran across this "chap" on Youtube.
I wish I had a camera on. Ya'll could have seen my reaction. I laughed out loud and almost fell out of my desk chair!!
I say, "WTF" is he doing?
Is that actually fishing?
Minnow fishing?
Bait fishing?
sitting around in the water, with slicker pants on?
And I thought the Filipino's on "our" jetty rocks used a L-O-N-G pole!!
ENJOY THIS ONE:
There's obviously a entire series of this guy doing this, "whatever this is?" I wouldn't call it fishing.....would you? Funny Shit, huh?
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Let me share this with ya'll.
The other day out with the Kready Krew aboard the Jettywolf while we were catching 100 pounder type Blacktips and Spinner Sharks.
I was running out of hooks. For some reason that day. No matter what I did, I could never get my hook back. These dudes were slashing 200-300 lb. test leaders at boatside.
You may see that blue ARC de-hooker pole in my video's and photos. Yep, that's the ticket to getting hooks out of the BIG toothy critters.
I gave up on all circle hooks when doing the shrimp boat sharkin & release fishing. Way to difficult to get the hooks out, even with the ARC dehooker pole.
So, yesterday my new Sharkin hooks arrived!
200 of them!
Yep. ANOTHER SUPER EBAY DEAL, for Dave. Same place I got the ARC de-hooker pole, for a whopping 30 bucks! YOU can pay $30 for a stinkin' 20" ARC de-hooker, for Snapper releasing.
Oh, hunting deals is my middle name. I don't pay MSRP for anything. So that means I buy NO significant tackle here in J-ville.
I can't afford too.
Back to the hooks.
Check these super tough perma-steel 10/0 VMC Big Game Hooks, out!
The eye is even "welded shut".
Go look for yourself. You can't get any hook similar to these 10/0's for less than approx $70-$80 bucks a box of 25! Many times hooks such as these even on Ebay are $25 for ten of them!
My deal, 200 count for $100.
NO MORE RUNNING OUT OF SHARKIN' HOOKS ABOARD THE JETTYWOLF ANY LONGER.

9/3 & 9/4 - What a difference a day makes...and time, too.
But "Mother Nature" had different plans.
I caught about 30 "hawg leg" Mullet at the dock when I got there. A whole school sat milling around in the corner of "our" new docks in Mayport. So I grabbed the Pogie Net and gotcha!!
Tossed them in the livewell, and some in the cooler.
I tried it all. Cut mullet, live mullet, as my crew dropped dead shrimp down just for fun. They caught Jacks, but that was about it. I fished those live Mullet and was prepared for a Tarpon or a Blacktip (shark) to nail them.
We did have one bit in half, and did catch a Nurse Shark on a live one on the bottom but no matter what I did. The Jetties were kickin my azz! Wind one way, current going another. Even had my anchor getting stuck and had to work my magic to get it out of the cables that are over in the sand south of the south Jetty tip.
The S.E. seabreeze was really blowing. One hateful thing that many times happens in the afternoon.
And reason I leave at 7am.
We ended up fishing the river on the rising tide up by Whiteshell fish rocks and had ZERO bites.
Just Katfish nibbles on cut Mullet.
NOT GOOD! So we called it and early day and headed in.
------------------------------------------------------------
9/4 - departing promptly at 7am, I had a crew of four. I had a whole pile of dead "hawg leg" Mullet in the cooler, still.
And we headed straight for the Shrimp boats. And I'm glad we did.
It was NOT slick calm, the sea breeze the day before and during the night had the Ocean with some serious roll to it. (I DON'T WANT IT SLICK CALM)
(5-6) - ONE HUNDRED POUND BLACKTIP/SPINNER SHARKS, later and some rain, and a storm going north up the coast as we fished about a mile out, had my crew WOW'd!
Almost all the Sharks "jumped" and a few were serious "spinner sharks". And one even ran out damn close to 300 yards of line and then STRAIGHTENED OUT a 10/0 Mustad hook!!!!!!!!!!!!
DAMN, what the hell was that??
Here's a caption for this photo: (below)
"Ya think three on one rod is enough??" hahahahaha...
I was a "tad" busy, but did get this one freaking out at boat side.
After the seas got quite nasty and the rollers started folding over and everyone git their arm sockets straightened out. We slow peddled our way back in, and headed down river.
THE REDBASS SPAWN HAS STARTED,,,,the Male Reds are "milking" up the deck of the Jettywolf, and have been for about the last two weeks. Today, they made a real mess. But as soon as that falling tide got right.
It was GAME-ON! 6 Redbass from 22 pounds to 27 pounds. All MALES.
My crew today did really good.....bringing in approx 750 pounds of Ocean & River brusiers. It was a very exciting trip even, for yours truly.
We avoided a storm, worked our way thru the sloppy seas, and worked on the big Redbass nice and patiently. Hit the dock and everyone was tired, and talking about what a day it was.
DO YOU HAVE THE "SALT" TO TRY OUT THE BIG ONES? CHARTER@CAPTDAVES.COM IS MY EMAIL. IF YA DO.

9/1- LABOR DAY (one month closer to winter)
TAKE YOUR BEST GIRL FISHING.
Had Colin & Suzie aboard today. They were out on the Jettywolf, last January when it was cold as all hell. And the TROUT & REDS were chewin' up live shrimp on "float-rigs" like mad, along the big rocks.
We'll Colin wanted to get Suzie (the gal who took the super Dolphins shots, I have displayed on the right side bar of this blog) on some big Sharks behind the shrimp boat....."jus' for Fun!"
So we left out and headed straight to the North Jetty. Anchored up, and fished pieces of Shrimp on the bottom and filled the livewell with Sand Trout, Croakers and Whiting.
LIVE WIGGLERS is what I call'em. Absolutely guaranteed to get eaten and FAST, behind the shrimp boats!!!
Go catch Pogies all ya want. Drive around up and down the beach. Sweat, and throw that cast net.
NOT ME. I like fishing. And like fishing for our baits. BIG BAITS.
I do fishing charters. Not running around, castnet charters.
It's what I've always done.
Well, we had Suzie hooked up time after time on Sharks. But just not ones BIG enough. Huge for her.
But Colin and I wanted her on a truly large puller.
And right at the end of the day, on the last bait, as the shrimp boat the "Dying Breed" pushed bycatch over the side Suzie hooked up to the one.
Eating her live wiggler and flying through the air and splashing. Finally a B-I-G Spinner or Blacktip like we had Yesterday!!
(Each and every day is completely different. This is bazzaro world Florida. I cannot count on anything...I believe I have preached that now for 18 years.)
Suzie fought the Shark as it screamed out line. She just a little thing. And her back and arms were beginning to GIVE OUT.
Colin took over, and then we lost it! He reeled in the line and the stainless steel 10/0 straight hook we were using was BENT OPEN!
Never have I had one of these hooks B-E-N-D. Holy smokes. We may not have had the bit in the horses mouth. After all the jumping the shark did, who knows where that hook ended up.
Yesterday we had a small Sharpnose shark hooked in the side. So, it's a mystery sometimes what happens out there behind the boat when these sharks are in a frenzy and swiping at the baits.
I gave Suzie the hook and said, I can't have this. You have it. It's bad mojo for me to keep it.
It'll be a reminder to you, of the power these sharks have. And a reminder of the BIG one that got away.
Sometimes, they WIN.

8/31 - BIG BAIT BIG BLACKTIPS
Had past customer Jim T. with his son and daughter aboard today.
FIRST OFF..........everyone catches. BAIT THAT IS!
We stopped by the N. Jetty and caught a livewell full of Croakers, Whiting and sand trout.
WHAT FOR?? (you ask)
BIG JUMPING BLACKTIP SHARKS, E SHRIMP BOATS WORKING OUTSIDE THE INLET.
(a summer ritual, when we're "inbetween" seasons)
We had Blacktips that were 150 pounder types EASILY today. Jumping and flipping out behind the boat.
THE LARGEST BIG GAME YOU WILL EVER CATCH AROUND THESE PARTS OF FLORIDA WITHIN SIGHT OF THE BEACH.
NO LONG BOAT RIDES. THAT'S THE JETTYWOLF MOTTO. CATCH FISH, NOT RIDE AROUND.
And that's another reason I like "fishing for bait". Because it;s FISHIN'. We had "double headers" on and lines around each other. But thats all standard fare for a day behind the shrimp boats.
Here's some photo that DO NOT give these dudes justice.
Great day.....beautiful, on Labor Day Weekend
(please give me some kind of heads-up, when reserving a day. More than 18 hrs, please)

8/30 - Tagged Redfish & Fried Trout
A FOLLOW-UP.....I be the follow up king. C'mon!
Friday, August 29, 2014
8/28 - FALL in the air, at Mayport Jetties?
And BTW...
After catching a tagged Redfish on 8/8, I finally got a hold of the tagging agency.
The Louisiana Redfish tagging program.
I called in the info, and then received a free hat, and the info of where and when it was tagged.
Here it is:
TAGGED: 2/2/2014 - Clapboard Creek and was measured at 30 inches.
RE-CAUGHT: by my customer Terry, 8/8/2014 end of the North Jetty, was measured at 31.5 inches and 8.5 pounds.
(it's sort of funny that Louisiana does the Redfish tagging program. Guess, Florida has no $$ for it?
Florida spends their money on paying idiots to dream up ridiculous fishing regulations instead!)

8/26 - Surviving "Cristobal"
OH YEAH....it was windy!
But the Jettywolf & crew prevails.
Had Dan G. aboard the Jettywolf today.
Fish Plan:
GO WEST!!
No Jetty Fishing today. Run up river and fish places like Mill Cove and the Dames Point area.
TODAY: 1st time I've bought LIVE shrimp since May.
And with plenty of jigheads. Dan and I went to get "Jiggy with it".
Jig-N-Shrimp combo meals for all.
High tide at 11am'ish, just coming off the NEW moon.
Plenty of fish. But with a very slow start. HECK, IT BLEW LIKE HELL! But was a nice day.
I'm sure the barometer was all over the place.
Ended up with, small Jacks, small Ladyfish, a Puffer, micro pup Redfish, a 14" Speckled Trout, 4 keeper Mangrove Snappers, on small one. and........
We survived CHRISTOBAL!
DO YOU HAVE THE SALT, TO TAKE ON THE ST. JOHNS RIVER AND MAYPORT JETTIES? DAN DID!
Monday, August 25, 2014
8/25 - Tropical Storm Cristobal?
WEATHER WATCH >>>>>>>Charter on Tuesday at 7am!
So I have the need to know.
I believe the Mayport Jetties won't be part of our scene on Tuesday.
More like what some call the "Back waters"...hahahahaha.

8/24 - a bay boat that can take the oysterbeds
I've said it a million times...a real "bay boat" isn't one with that's 28 foot, and is so glitzy you'd be so afraid to hurt it when running the shallows. But like S.U.V. vehicles, human's have a way of taking a great idea and really screwing it up.
To me, a S.U.V. is still a 1975 Ford Bronco. Boxy, powerful, high off the ground, short wheel base, and ready for mud, sand, and water.
I worked for a man when I was 16 who had this exact one. Orange and White!
He let me drive it to pick up supplies.
I was in LOVE then, and I am still in love NOW.
(can ya tell I like simple, no frills get the J-O-B done?)
But hell.....I also think Lady Ga-Ga is a total JOKE!
Bay boats and alloy plate welded together go hand in hand in my book.
-Lighter
-Float's higher
-Less power needed
-Tough
-Ready for abuse
Here's a mini - JETTYWOLF.
A 19' Pacific CC with T-top, twins and a trolling motor heading to the Gulf of Mexico area. Where it can do offshore Grouper, and shallow water Trout and Snook fishing all in the same day.
Twin 70 Yamaha's, (super idea!!!!!!) a live well, a big cooler, a casting deck. Some side rails, and a super tall wind, rain stopping windshield. Do ya really need more?
I see all these "bay boats" daily at the boat ramp. And no matter what. I'd have this one, pictured above before any I see daily that cost thousands and thousands more. Like "boat clones", they all start to look a like to me.
I'd skip the powder coated t-top and console personally...just more maintenance.
I'll take one of these "sweet 19's" any day. Would fit fishing the St. Johns river, the Jetties, and offshore NO PROBLEM!
Just a Jettywolf...FYI.

8/22 - LESS Reel maintenance??
Oh, reel maintenance really matters when you are keeping up a arsenal of 40 reels and use them 12 months a year.

8/20- It's better than 666
Growing....and now a member of the Hooked Up Network. A network of other Video Anglers across the country. That also helps promote each of us.
Thought I'd share
777 YouTube subscribers, just short of a 1/4 million "views".
But of course I'm not satisfied.
It's still funny, no matter how hard I work to "show" people with video, what they'll be doing, the boat they'll be on, the tackle used, the environment we fish etc.
You still can't please everyone!
-did you know I need a big cabin?
"so to get out of the hot summer sun"
-did you know I need a big cabin?
"so to get out of the cold in winter"
-did you know that fishing isn't picking fish out of the seafood counter at Wally's World?
"many think a Guided Charter is just that"
-why do people want species that don't fit the season we're in?
"because they want to not catch, I guess"
-guess what my j-o-b is? And why you're hiring me?
"to catch F-I-S-H...That's what we'll do!"
TELL ME IF YOU'VE BEEN TO ANY LOCAL FISHING GUIDES SITE AND HAS AS MUCH OR MORE INFO THAN THIS SITE HAS...MY E-MAIL IS: CHARTER@CAPTDDAVES.COM
IF SO...I GUESS I HAVE TO WORK EVEN HARDER TO SHOW YOU WHAT I DO.
BTW, I wish this was from out on the water. But this is the nicest sunset I've ever seen in a Winn Dixie grocery store parking lot.
And I never saw anyone else around even LOOK, up......(shows ya how in tune the general public is with their Earth!)

8/18 - COMING SOON, but not soon enough!!!!
pulled from the video ARCHIVES: (my YOUTUBE CHANNEL)
2013 First of October. REPORT on air temp, weekday fishing, and TROUT!
This will be coming around soon. And I can't wait.
I love pitchin' with super "LT", and Matrix Shads on lead-heads, so much I wish I lived in Louisiana!!!! (where that's basically all ya need to catch F-I-S-H)
But around here, it works a lot better when the water temp ISN'T 86 degrees!
Ran across this "video report" from last year at the jetties and thought I'd share it one mo' time.
Personally, I'd be getting ready to reserve a day ANYWHERE near a HOLIDAY.
(Labor day is fast approaching) Right now!!!!!!!!!

"The Video is great. It does not show how great the trip was. I have been fishing all over the greater US and Mexico and I can tell you that I have not been on a better trip then this trip. All my daughters and my needs were meet, the fishing was great. The boat and equipment were of the highest quality. I will reschedule the next time I'm in Jacksonville. Thanks again for a fabulous trip and a lifetime experience shared with my daughter. "

8/14 - BIG Shark charters in Jax? LOL!!!
Yeah, as usual I had huge plans. This summer was going to be a total experiment. And the facts are in, already in my book.
I wanted to do max. two persons, with "REEL GUYS" and target the truly big sharks just offshore.
And as you can plainly see here on my reports, it's not what I've been doing much of so far.....
"Yeah me and the family would like to go out shark fishing for the big ones. We surf fish......."
"I want the biggest shark ever. How much???"
So far all summer I've had TWO...count them ONE+ONE=TWO times that we did what we needed to do to target REAL Sharks. And out of two attempts, we caught one MONSTER. Okay not bad, that's 50/50.
Let's see what else I have tried in Jacksonville during the summer...
Oh yeah, years ago I was going to run out and try nothing but "vertical jigging" aka: Butterfly jigging methods. Bought the tackle, went over board and had ONE GUY who I did it with and it was a great success. Loads of Amberjacks and Cuda's. But hell, this is J-ville, not Miami. That's for sure.
After awhile I gave it up. And sold all the tackle that was needed. Experienced Fisherman is what that took.
The morale of the story is there just isn't enough die-hards that fish Jax. I'm not running offshore with the Family Affair thing. I need just a couple "REEL GUYS", ones that have fishing experience. Someone who understands that a 500 pound Bull, Tiger, or whatever Shark isn't going to be
"I.G." - Instantaneous Gratification!!!!!!!
We may or we may not even get a bite. Again, this is J-ville. Not 2 miles off of Palm Beach in "Gulf Stream waters".
No matter what I do, I have the best intentions. Problem is, I guess it's only what "I WANT TO DO".
I wanted to be in the Newspaper with huge Shark catches all summer. Get them to the boat, make no mistakes, not just break a rod each time out.
Yes, it's frustrating. I get e-mails, "I'm not interested in Sharks, I just want Kings and Cobia".
Well, that's your first problem.
Fishing isn't a trip to the Walmart! I do SPORT FISHING CHARTERS. Not, GROCERY STORE CHARTERS, especially during the summer.
When I'm anchored up on a reef. There's no telling what we'll catch. My second attempt at offshore BIG Sharkin', we didn't catch any Sharks, but we had 3 Cobia come up around the boat and caught one. Along with a Snapper and had a blast catching very willing Cuda's.....about 20 of them!
My customer Chris, that was on that particular trip said it best;
"I go fishing the way you should approach finding a good woman. Don't Go Looking, for that particular one. Just go have fun, and then all of a sudden. You'll catch the fish on your bucket list, and meet the gal of your dreams! It's all just fishing, either one, RIGHT?"

8/8 & 8/10 - Mayport Jetty bite, August Heat
2- days:
8/8 - Terry Hicks, Bass fisherman from Tenn.
8/10 - Mike & Phil, "regulars" from Middleburg Fl.
Enjoy, because I work hard making these and yes enjoy doing these these for you.
AUGUST DAYZ.......keepin' it close. No long boat rides. Plenty of action.
Lot's a "toothy critters", in amongst some decent "Gamers".
Hell, it's pinnacle o' summer, in Jax.

8/8-8/10 - HOT SUMMER DAYZ
Hot, Humid and stick a fork in me, when is winter getting here?
August in Jax....probably the same as August in most of Florida. But here we have to WORK at FISHING when the water temps 86 degrees.
There's a lot of teeth out there this time of year, too.
8/8 - I'm trying to complete a video of Terry H. a Tenn. Bass fisherman out for a day of jetty fishing.
No photo's just video. Maybe someday I'll get the video done.
8/9 - Bryan and Zoey.....she was as cute as a button and a natural Anglerette! From Croakers to Sharks to Big Redbass we had it all. Amazing, smart 11 year old who was a pleasure to have aboard the Jettywolf.
Her dad stretching a string a few times:
On Sunday, 8/10 had Mike and Phil aboard......VIDEO COMING
we float-rig fished live Pogies down the jetty rocks for two Redbass, one 27" and one 32"
Still working on putting video together. But no days off till Wednesday. And sleep? I am deprived at the moment. So, editing video right now I just can not do.
NEXT UP:
Monday 1/2 day - 2 adults
Tuesday full day - 2 adults
Thursday 2 hr Kids trip
Saturday - 3 adults
Don't be a late comer. Book your charters before leaving your house if you coming to visit J-ville.
But then again, late comers will never see or read this. So I say it to the wind......
