7/26 - FINALLY.......!!!!
"A JETTYWOLF MOMENT" - long over due, or I'm just getting old. It's one or the other, but it's happening right now JULY 26th 2017.
This project started with the price shopping, design ideas etc. way back a month ago on June 26th.
I had a standard T-top on my last boat the FOR REELIN ll, but over time and being a real die hard, I took it off and sold it to some guy. I went 100% hard core. Had a super tall custom windshield built, a new grab rail was made to go around the windshield, added 8 rod holders vertically down the side of the console. I fished the boat that way for almost 7 years.
So naturally, when I had the Jettywolf built, I did the same thing. NO TOP...mega console, rod holders running down the side of the console vertically.
The Jettywolf will be 11 years old come October 18th....."that folks is a LONG time to have the sun beating down on you.
Now, the Jettywolf gets a complete make-over! A HUGE FOUR POST TOP!

7/24 - More New Moon Fishing & Trout Workshop:
CCA FLORIDA ADVOCATE EMAIL:
7/24 - Big Redbass bite today was not good at all. Had James M and his Mom out all day.
Well at first, it rained on us pretty good first thing this morning. (My new top on the Jettywolf will help with staying dry....when its done. Hopefully by Thursday the 26th!!!!!!)
this pic just doesn't do these clouds justice. It was ominous looking.
the red bite wasn't even close to two days ago.
but we finally got one to hook itself.
when the tide was flooding so hard we couldn't even fish for the reds, we fished a slower current area with shrimp and 2 ounce egg sinkers and caught 4 Pup black drum, and two were 15" so they went in the box. We also had mangrove snappers and small Lane snappers.

7/22 - New Moon, SMOKING current of the ST. JOHNS great salty bay
http://www.captdaves.com - Book your charter Today!
"JETTYWOLF LIVE" - 7/22/2017
fishing with charter customers on the St. johns river, Jacksonville Florida, aboard my ''Jettywolf'', Bottom fishing on a wicked rising NEW MOON, tide, with too much current to start off with. NO LACK OF CURRENT HERE......''we have way too much!!!" We started out with 8 oz. to hit the bottom
7/23 - a few catch pics......VIDEO coming
sometimes it's it seems very difficult to get magazine quality photos of customers, especially the kids. Don't know why, but it is. To get a great photo I need to position the person, the fish, other people on the boat. And no one really wants to work with me.
Thats why video is easier!
here's two examples:
earlier this week:
- My Large'ness, of course is present, the Black Drum is present, where's my Jr. Angler? but his non-fishing sister sure is there! I was trying to get me and the kid together....in a good photo.
on 7/22 We had several good size Bull Redfish. This one was 26 pounds, and after a arduous battle, my angler was struggling to even HOLD the fish up!
-video of this day coming soon.

"JETTYWOLF MOMENT"
An ole favorite, the Ugly Stik Striper rod 7' casting MEDIUM LIGHT.
I love a rod that bends, is the bungee cord between the fish and me. I want to challenge my Angling skill, I like LIGHT TACKLE!
I owned these rods when they had terrible silver guides. These rods fill in the MED. LIGHT category, of Ugly Stiks. The new and improved are worth looking at.

7/14 - ''I CAN DREAM. CAN'T I?''
IT'S JULY 14TH, THE PINNACLE OF SUMMER. THE ''HEAT'' IS INTENSE. SWEATING INCESSANTLY IS THE NORM.
EVERYONE I TAKE KNOWS IT. BUT, THIS IS THE TIME OF YEAR EVERYONE 'THINKS' IS THE BEST AND ONLY TIME OF YEAR, TO CATCH BIG FISH.
THEY ARE SO WRONG!!
PERSONALLY.......''I LOVE THIS'' (see videos below)
I LIKE REMINISCING. MAKES ME FEEL NICE AND COOL, IN THE HEAT.
SOOOOO, LOOKING FORWARD TO DAYS LIKE THIS, AGAIN.
C-O-L-D, AND FULL OF FISH.

7/12 - BANANA CURSE????
TWO YELLOW FISHERMAN'S CURSE, MADE INTO MY COOLER!
We lost a total of 3 big fish today. Did the banana curse have anything to do with this?
WHY ARE BANANAS CONSIDERED FISHING FOOD? I wouldn't take a banana on a hike through the woods, let alone fishing!
Things were weird, and I mentioned that I hope we don't have any bananas on board. Then, Bell went up to the cooler and pulled out two neatly frozen bananas! Of course, I suggested they eat them, and fast. So, we could get a fish to the boat.
Of course, once gone from sight. Connor finally got a few Redfish to the boat and in the net!
The current today was way worse than yesterday. (still a full moon)
It's funny that the damn current in this ''great salty bay'', can really hurt a day of fishing. Just imagine how strong it will be after they dredge the ''great salty bay'', another 10' foot deep? Not sure if I want to be here to see the outcome & destruction.
7/11 - Redfish Morning.....Hot Afternoon.
NEXT....
Richard and his daughter Susan. "a super crew!!!!!"
Prior customers, Richard and his daughter Susan visiting Ponte Vedra, had a Redfish blow out morning with Bull Redfish from 18 to 12 pounds. Cut chunks of Pogies for bait, using my ""JDM"" Shimano Aji-matic reels from Japan, and Shakespeare Ugly Stik Tiger lite jigging rods. Fishing the "old" Little Jetties area on a full moon flood tide.
Absolute joy to have aboard the Jettywolf. Susan is just a teen-ager. But certainly didn't act like many teen age girls. "She was ALL IN!" And that was fun.

"JETTYWOLF How-To" -spring, summer & fall, EZ fishing
discusses trolling SeaStriker Planers and knock off Clark spoons found on Ebay in bulk. at area inlets for Jacks, Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish, King Mackerel, and more.
Because it's old school, NO ONE does it anymore.
Which is so surprising, because trolling planers & spoons (the hardware) is so effective................
AND FUN TO DO.

JULY 6, 7, 8th.....HOT
On the 6th had Dave C. ad his 10 year old grandson out, again. (twice this month)
First time was a few weeks ago and we "slayed" the Mangrove Snappers on live shrimp in the river. This time the Mangroves were hard to find in any numbers. But we still caught a bunch, they were just kinda small to keep. Plus we had several pup Black Drum, Flounder, and Lane Snappers! The action was good, fishing just live shrimp on light gear.
Here's a pic of a few:
On the 7th, I had Paul & Charlie from Tenn. (VIDEO COMING)
We hit the inlet with the "hardware". Trolled planers and spoon and had Spanish Mackerel and lot's of 5 pound Jack Crevalles. We tried bottom fishing a little while, there really was no bite. So we packed it in on a 1/2 day trip. On the video I'll show you what NO ONE does any more.
It's so fun and especially "effective". If you have kids or newbies aboard. This can be a way to show them some all out mayhem, in the saltwater fishing world.
On the 8th I had Big Tom and his son Joseph aboard from Utah. Joseph was the "hot rod". We had Redfish up to 20 pounds. And even the first one small enough to keep since last winter! Coming in at 26 inches. 99% of all my Redfish are all over sized, especially this time of year.
We also had 4 pup Black Drum that came in at a 1/2" short, and many other assorted bottom feeders, such as some Croakers, Seabass, etc.
This 20# Redfish had a wound. It looked to be a Shark bite. But was healing over.
Here's a 28-1/2 incher, that was promptly released.
The 1st "keeper sized"" Redfish aboard the JETTYWOLF in months.
A perfect 26 incher. That turned into a late lunch at Singleton's Seafood Shack in Mayport, after being caught just a few hours before. "That's really fresh seafood!"

July 4th Holiday "season", best and worst!
Every single year, I deal with the same exact thing. Vacation people, wanting me to produce miracles in the middle of summer in this heat.
Year in year out, it's the same thing.
"I want this...." My answer: "Come back in December!"
Then at the boat ramp. There's the "I own the boat ramp" crowd, and the ""it's all about me, me, me crowd. AKA: "boat ramp idiots".
Year in year out, it's the same thing.

Then at the boat ramp. There's the "I own the boat ramp" crowd, and the ""it's all about me, me, me crowd. AKA: "boat ramp idiots".
YES, this week can be the worst Holiday of the entire year!
And at the same time my busiest. Some folks learn to P-L-A-N, and reserve their charters a month in advance instead of calling me the day before.
I also battle N-O-T being a "deep sea party boat" this time of year.
No, I don't go "deep sea fishing", and No, I don't take 8 people.
I know, everyone has bored to tears relatives and friends visiting. So over a cooler of beer and some BBQ, they figure..."lets go deep sea fishing!"
-whatever that is. I really don't know.
(Justin, Sally and myself, boxed a 15 Mangrove limit
while fishing just one spot, plus a Sheepshead.)
Have not taken many photos over the last week (Hate my new phone and the way it deals with photos!) but here is what I've been doing the most of.
Adults and a few "kids trips". Mangrove Snappers, lots of Black Drum, throw in a summer Sheepshead. Some Yellowmouth Trout, Whiting, too many 4" seabass, piggyperch, and pinfish.
Disposing of many hooks and sinkers at the Jetties one day. Because the place is a complete Shark fest! No need to go out there thinking it'll be anything different. Dead shrimp even gets hook ups on Spinner Sharks!
All I do is stand there and re-rig rods for hours while watching tackle disappear.
(JETTY Black Drum, in between the Sharks )
Lots of "pup" Black Drum around. But not a whole lot make the slot size.
Tried Trout fishing way up river one day. That was futile!!
My new slogan is, Mangrove (invasive) Snappers, if ya can't beat them, join them.
Which is another way of saying. "box them!" Right now a 5 per person limit shouldn't be difficult for anyone. They are damn near carpeting the river and you WILL NOT be able to get away from them!
So, thats my story prior to the July 4th Holiday, let's see how it'll be when things go back to normal.

6/28 - a happy Jettywolf, is a spic & span Jettywolf
took boat over to Pelagic Fabrication to get measurements for the new top that's being built, then welded to the Jettywolf........NOT SOON ENOUGH!
Yes, this could and will take weeks. Damn, should have started this in Feb.
but the ''funds'', weren't available then.
Guess NO ONE really wants to be apart of my ''help fund my boat top project''.
as per this blog post: https://blockurl99.blogspot.com/2017/06/69-artists-rendering-of-top-i-need-on.html
It's so discouraging when you offer such a deal, and 'one' follower mentions it. And I look and that blog post had 192 readers! Guess, I should be a member of some cult, huh? Then, the members may get behind me. But going it alone, even after 20 plus years. Yeah, it's very discouraging. But, I'm used to it.
IT'S IN THE WATER IN THIS TOWN. Fishing isn't a way of life like it is in many parts of Louisiana. That's why I wished I lived there!!
Here's the mega spotty Redbass from the other day. Yep, another crappy smart phone picture. (not mine, hehehe...)

6/24 - NEW MOON FISHING???
"JETTYWOLF LIVE"
Inlanders just don't get it. Lakes, ponds, streams in middle America just don't have them. And that's ........
T-I-D-E-S!!!!!
It takes years and years to learn to fish tidal waters. And decades to make you think you've master the Tides. Here in Bazzaro world Florida our tides create current, and thats because the St. Johns River is dredged to China!!! The ATLANTIC OCEAN fills up the river, which in the area I fish is not a river at all. It's just a giant salty bay with too much current.
MASTERING IT TAKES DECADES. So I sure feel sorry for the newbie fisherman that moves here from Indiana! Get help. Go on a charter with someone who can help you understand your biggest hurdle while fishing bazzaro world Florida, so called river.
We had to work with current all day. But, don't fight it. You will loose! On days like this a 6 hour fishing charter maybe gets a few good hours out of the whole tide to actually Light Tackle Fish.

HERE'S A FELLOW YOUTUBER CATCHING FLOUNDER IN NJ.
6/23 - JULY 6th can't get here quick enough!
I do alot of taking kids all summer. And I like it. Unlike many "inshore guides" around here, that turn into "Offshore Guru's" when the going gets tough. I have my perfect place in the sun, having fun with youngsters, 2 maybe 3 hours at a time. And I can do a few of these trips per day, which is nice.
BUT...I like taking photos. And it's a rarity if I can get the kids to hold a fish, let alone hold a fish for a super magazine quality photo.
So excuse the photos I'll be posting of them..."all summer long".
-here's two cutie pie sisters from Minnesota with one of their pup Black Drum they caught.
NOW, WHO'S READY TO GET DOWN TO BUSINESS?
AND THAT BUSINESS IS "JIGGING". NO 4 PERSONS PARTY BOAT TRIPS.
ONE OR TWO PEOPLE THAT'S ALL.
ALL I NEED IS A SLICK CALM DAY, SO I CAN ALSO TAKE THE FISHING BOW, AND GET A FEW SHOTS OFF AT A SPADEFISH, CUDA, OR COBIA.
I'M READY.....
Williamson "Vortex" jigs....they spin!!
3-1/2 oz. and a few 5 ounce.
oh, the JULY 6TH THING. IT'S WHEN I TAKE BOAT IN FOR A TOP TO BE BUILT ON IT.

6/19 - here's a few......
why I have no idea, but why do all my charter trips get all clumped together?
Versus, being spread out. I'll go 4-5 days with zero, then all of a sudden it's 5 booked dates in a row. It's all about the ebb and flow of the public.
So, here's a few pics of the last few days
-took out some local kids on Fathers Day and we wore out the Mangrove Snappers on just dead shrimp over some rocky bottom in the river for 2 hrs on my 2 hour Kids fishing trips. ( it was hard to get them to actually hold the fish for a good photo)
The threat of rain, wind and ''getting very wet'' is a daily deal now every single day.
Getting the top built on the boat has me counting the days till JULY 6TH!!!!
When I take the boat in to spend a lot of money!

After this Trout, they had a handful of Jacks, on the Float Rig, before I called it quits because of the darkening sky and threat of rain.

6/15 - Shimano's USA vs. JDM "triton like" reels:
SHIMANO "Triton like" USA versus JDM
Capt Daves Sportfishing Charters
http://www.captdaves.com - 904-642-9546 Jacksonville Fishing Charters
"JETTYWOLF TACKLE JUNKIE" 6/15/2017
Capt Dave, a true Tackle Junkie discusses in a lengthy video the big differences in the Shimano Trition like "Graphite, Levelwind, Star Drag" Shimano series of reels.
The version sold in the USA, versus the JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) styles, features and build qualities of each.
As a huge fan of the workhorse, Shimano TR100-G in which he owns at least 20 of. He started to see a whole lot of "similar style" reels sold on Ebay. But, when it boils down to it. The similarities, are far apart when it comes to the typical Japanese engineering and "Bells & Whistles.
In this video here, it's the first set Capt Dave bought. And wonders why and what "Aji-matic" is. And is the dial on the side a tension setting or is it a mag cast control?
https://youtu.be/cYpB-_vl684
This video shows another set of "Triton Like"" reels called the Shimano Titanos, and also has a "Aji-matic" drag.....BUT ALSO A OFFSET REEL FOOT! Why?
He wishes he could find a Japanese interpreter at least, who could read the instructions, if not a person in Japan who could explain the "Aji-matic drag and offset reel foot" of all these reels.
These new reels. The Shimano Titianos will be pressed straight into service. And the price was right for such a Triton like reel thats brand new, versus the prices these reels are getting today even in the USA versions with zero "bells and whistles".
But thats what makes the USA version of the Shimano TR100-G reel so good. No bearing to get rusty. Not much to ever break. Very non-corrosive, being a Graphite body.
Capt Dave just loves this series of reels. Like seeing the different "flavors" offered in Japan. And hopes you learn along with him. About the differences in the USA market and Japanese market.

REDFISH ON A MUGGY MORNING FOR TWO BOYS FROM BELFAST....NORTHERN IRELAND, FOR YA'LL THAT ARE GEOGRAPHICALLY CHALLENGED. JULIAN NOW (RED SHORTS) WORKS HERE AND LIVES IN S.C.
GOT REALLY LUCKY. STARTING OFF WITH A SLACK TIDE GAVE US THE CHANCE TO USE SUPER LIGHT TACKLE. BOATING ONE NICE REDFISH, THEN A SECOND.
THAT'S WHEN I BUSTED OUT THE GOPRO. THE 2ND ONE WRAPPED AROUND THE ANCHOR SEVERAL TIMES.
THIS VIDEO STARTS THEN! WITH US ALL ON THE BOW OF THE BOAT TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHICH WAY THE FISH WENT, WHEN THE REDFISH JUST POPS TO THE SURFACE.
SOON AFTER THE TIDE CHANGED AND STARED TO RISE AND CREATE GOOD CURRENT, SO WE WENT TO MY NEW (JDM) SHIMANO AJI-MATIC REELS FROM JAPAN AND HEAVIER UGLY STIK TIGER JIGGING RODS.
ALL BAITS WERE CUT "POGIE" CHUNKS.
THEN, THE CLOUDS STARTED ROLLING IN AND WE BEAT FEET OUT OF THERE AFTER 4 REDFISH BETWEEN 12-15 POUNDS.
BY THE TIME WE GOT BACK TO THE DOCK, THE RAIN STARTED. BY THE TIME I PUT THE BOAT ON THE TRAILER, IT WAS COMING DOWN GOOD.
BY THE TIME I GOT HOME THE STORM,REALLY DUMPED SOME SERIOUS RAIN, FLOODING MY FRONT YARD.
ALWAY SIDE WITH ""CAUTION"". THAT'S WHAT I DO. NO SENSE RISKING THE BAD WEATHER, FOR ANOTHER HOUR OF FISHING.
iT WAS A GREAT MORNING ON THE ST. JOHNS RIVER OUT OF MAYPORT FLORIDA, FOR THE GUYS WHO TRAVELLED FROM SAVANNAH GA. TO FISH WITH ME, HERE IN JACKSONVILLE FL.

6/12 - "weekends....holy smokes!"
I'm already in the can't wait stages of "weekdays in winter". These weekends are horrible. The incessant wakes, load boats, jet skis.
Really folks, do I have to post my differences between weekends and weekdays video here again?
Either way. The inshore bite is tough, It couldn't get any tougher than on Moon days. Now it's the full moon, coming up is the new moon.....the really wicked one!
Saturday morning we lost a big Redfish, and thats the only big red bite we got.
Then we went float-rig fishing and picked up Jacks, Ladyfish, Mangrove Snappers and a......"a Trout" as in ONE.
Then after no more action we bottom fished in the incessant wakes and caught whiting instead of big Reds.
Sunday I had a local fisherman, who wanted to learn all about trolling up Inlet Spanish Mackerel. Well, we basically tore em up pretty good in the 2-4 foot seas at the end of the jetties. No huge ones, but our 15 legals in the box with several that didn't make the 12" cut. He had a crash course in this is how ya do it, correctly versus what ever one thinks you do.
Coastal Spanish Mackerel fishing is a "lost technique". No one does it any more.
But I'm old school and it still works and still is fun.
Then, he wanted to learn the way of the float-rig. So we went and did that with limited success. We got bites and lost fish. But I finally tagged a decent 18 incher before we headed in.
I know I should have taken pics of all our Spanish Macs and the one Trout.
But damn it's hot. And I'm not thinking straight when I'm all hot and bothered.
Either way, you play the tides right and there plenty of fun Spanish Macs out there still. Which even surprised me.
Now, it's Sunday evening and I have a Monday morning charter I just left a message for, and received zero call back. So I guess I'm going Monday morning?
We'll see, that's another report.
